Was wondering if anybody has a less than favourable view of soccer/football after this World Cup?

After watching some truly unispired and boring games (some, not all).....add to that the diving, crying and whining, bad sportmanship and a disappointing final....I can't say that I'm looking forward to another World Cup.....

There also doesn't seem to be any stand up guys that you can truly respect in football....With heels like C. Ronaldo and Mattarzzi pulling stunts that have decided the outcomes of games it is kind of disgusting....

And guys that I thought had class like Zidane also pulling some classless manuvers.....

Not to mention the annoying fans in Toronto!!!! Tone it the fuck down!!! I'm happy when my team wins but I don't go disturbing everybody else in the city.....

I have to admit I just watch football/soccer only when there's a World Cup but this is the first time that after a World Cup where I have been kind of disillusioned with the whole event....

Can't wait for hockey to start.....

The Hammer
it occurs every 4 years, you'll forget by then and be drawn in again

all 64 games aren't going to be gems, the group stage was very exciting...and the games are naturally going to come down in entertainment value come the knock out stage...I say bring on Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010!

Actually this has been considered one of the better world cups by alot of commentators. it's all about perspective.

Personally I look forward to seeing the Ivory Coast back in 4 years. They were delightful team to watch.

And its gems like this that make people look forward to come back.

Manji, you're always so negative and angry, whats up with that????

I and most people I know loved this WC.
There were some dull games but at least 75% were exciting IMO.
Even watching T&T holding Sweden to a 0-0 draw was fun to watch

Hey man, join the party, Everone has! Don't be bitter dude. If Portugal won, it probably would of have been worse, or even the Brasilains for that matter!! So chill, go grab an espresso and enjoy!!

By the way, if you think the Leafs are gonna do anything this year, I suggest you keep waiting. As, a true Leaf fan, they are going knowhere. At least it will be quite for you in the spring of next year!

Dont be hater man!!

While I may not agree with what you have said, I would agree that this was the poorest World Cup ever...Particularly the final game....Things in particular that will need to change before the next World Cup by Fifa will be: punishing the diving, punishing the exaggeration of injuries and the elimination of the penalty shootout...

If some or all of these are not changed, the World Cup will lose roughly 5% of its viewers...

Also, most commentators DO NOT think that this was the best World Cup ever...Are you on crack dude? Please provide a source to these commentators that you suggest would say that it was...

It was a disgraceful cup all in all...

Also wanted to add to the other TERB member? Why the hell would you bad mouth Brazil? Italy was far from the best team in this tournament...

Actually I read in Bullshit Digest they will lose 51% of their audience if things don't improve.

You know it is a ratings bonanza if CTV does not even bother to show Shakira lying about her hips.

What other sport can afford to not show the entertainment and instead have crusty old Howard discuss the game.

Only in soccer.

Well you have to look at other sports, say hockey where some players have had done some dispicable acts. Yet the fan base (atleast in Canada) does not waiver. There are those, like myself, who were fed up of hockey antics and never returned, but I know I'm the minority.

Soccer is a world game. Ok not so much so in North American. The kids live and breathe the game, so when International game happens it will always draws their attention. Something they hope to achive one day.

I'm sure many player will sour the game, but they don't necessarily blame the game and want to give up the game they love.

Matterazzi maybe be a hero in the Italian public today, but come September, he will villanized, unless your an Inter fan.

I'll be one of them. Forsa Roma.

O

Oil Please

I am not a soccer fan and never watch it, but bring out the World Cup and I become a huge FAN! This years was probably one of the best I have seen. The best TEAM won and im not an Italian fan.

a dimentia you will never reach
bigger and bigger every time

The World Cup tournament continues to draw more and more fans every 4 years. Take into account that in 2002 the tournament was held in 2 countries for the first time,Korea and Japan. This marked the first time it being held in Asia. The next one will be held in South Africa. Nice to see this after watching Ghana play some splendid matches. They had the youngest team in this years WC,and they will improve by 2010. Soccer is a world wide sport and is the main number one sport throughout Europe,South America and Africa, not to mention how it is growing everywhere else. Klinsmen has just stepped down as head coach of Germany and is rumoured to be going to take over head coaching duties for the US team. This makes sense seeing as how he's living in California. I wouldn't be surprised if the WC is held in the US again very soon. They have very large venues, such as the Rose Bowl stadium and many others that can accomodate more fans and they know how to make money. For every North American fan who decides to stop watching WC play there will be 10 more fans worldwide viewing for the first time(lol). It seems like only those who's team was elininated from the tourney are the ones who are crying about it? This years WC had the largest viewership ever,so how can anyone say it was the poorest and most disgraceful cup to date? Was it the best WC ever? I don't know. Does it matter,no. There were many excellant matches in the tournament and you have to keep in mind that not every Super Bowl,Stanley Cup final,NBA final or World Series are always exciting. Does that mean that people will stop watching these sporting events,no? And one last thing! Italy obviously was the best team in the WC,THEY WON IT!

I'd liked the 2002 Cup better ( alot more upsets for example). The only problem with that tournament was the game times.

Some of the celebrating was over the top too - going around honking horns and waving flags when you won a pool game you were supposed to win reminds me of Leaf fans taking to the streets when they win a game in the first round.

But the Leafs winning a game in round one was is a major accomplishment. Hell, the Leafs playing a game in round one is a major accomplishment.

Sorry Manji i have to disagree. The sad thing about Football/Soccer today is the ref calls or non calls in this tournament. I seriously think that some of the refs are bias and certain teams have the powers on there side.
Football is a business first and foremost and we must not forget that. To really appreciate the game you have to watch Italy's win over Germany. On that performance alone they deserve the Title. No i am not italian.

What performance? All they did was hang on by their fingernails until the penalty shootout...The Italians didn't have a single shot on France for almost 60 minutes of the game...
