It hasn't been publicized at all, but the world chess championship has just concluded!
The 26-year-old Magnus Carlsen is the world's highest ranking player, and was a young phenom, beating the Indian Vishy Anand for the World Championship a few years ago.
He is an incredibly talented player, who was defending his title against the lower ranked Russian Karjakin:

There were 12 standard time games, and 10 were drawn, and each player won one.
Today, they had a tiebreaker, and the first two were draws. Carlsen won the third game. In the fourth game, Carlsen's last move stunned the chess world.
Carlsen played Queen to h6 check!!! Sacrificing the queen.
Note that this leads to forced checkmate. After the king takes the Queen, the Rook goes to h8, with checkmate. Or if the pawn takes the queen, the Rook takes the pawn on f7 with checkmate.
What a fitting way to end the match. And on Carlsen's birthday to boot!
