*shakes head*

Someone is infected with HIV is fine until it results in AIDS. Then they're fucked. AFAIK, the drugs given try to keep HIV from developing into AIDS. But once that happens, it's over.

And since you're pretty mellow with HIV, mind if I infect you with it? Just for shits and giggles. Because you know, it's not the death sentence it once was...

"She arrived in Canada in 1995 and danced at Toronto's Zanzibar Tavern for most of her career, which lasted until 2004."

What name did she use when she worked at the Zanzibar?

Diagnosed 19 years ago, this November.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Johnson#HIV_announcement_and_Olympics_.281991.E2.80.9392.29

After a physical before the 1991–92 NBA season, Johnson discovered that he had tested positive for HIV. In a press conference held on November 7, 1991, Johnson made a public announcement that he would retire immediately. He stated that his wife Cookie and their unborn child did not have HIV, and that he would dedicate his life to "battle this deadly disease". Johnson initially said that he did not know how he contracted the disease, but later acknowledged that it was through having multiple sexual partners during his playing career. At the time, only a small percentage of HIV-positive people had contracted it from heterosexual sex, and it was initially rumored that Johnson was gay or bisexual, although he denied both. Johnson's announcement became a major news story in the United States, and in 2004 was named as ESPN's seventh most memorable moment of the past 25 years. Many articles praised Johnson as a hero, and former U.S. President George H. W. Bush said, "For me, Magic is a hero, a hero for anyone who loves sports."

Despite his retirement, Johnson was voted by fans as a starter for the 1992 NBA All-Star Game, although his former teammates Byron Scott and A. C. Green said that Johnson should not play, and several NBA players, including Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone, argued that they would be at risk of contamination if Johnson suffered an open wound while on court. Johnson led the West to a 153–113 win and was crowned All-Star MVP after recording 25 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds. The game ended after he made a last-minute three-pointer, and players from both teams ran onto the court to congratulate Johnson.

Johnson was chosen to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics for the US basketball team, dubbed the "Dream Team" because of the NBA stars on the roster. During the tournament, which the USA won, Johnson played infrequently because of knee problems, but he received standing ovations from the crowd, and used the opportunity to inspire HIV-positive people.

How long can you live with HIV?

Magic Johnson was diagnosed back in 1991 and he's still alive. I'm sure having money helps too...

Magic Johnson, apart from being healthy as a horse when he contracted it, has also been very lucky - unlike Arthur Ashe. Ashe went HIV+ from a blood transfusion and barely lived 5 years after the fact. Magic Johnson was infamous for his promiscuity - again, unlike Arthur Ashe.

It's all a matter of luck. For the excessive lifestyle he lived in the 1970's, it is a miracle that David Bowie is still alive - unlike Freddy Mercury.

Useless stats. So two live long lives. How many hundreds of thousands have died between that time?

I can't believe I'm seeing this discussion - oh actually I can because sometimes the level of stupidity on this board is stunning. How the hell do some people have the brains to turn on a computer?

As posted above, to those that don't think HIV/AIDS is a big deal, would you care to be infected with it?
1+

Amen.

I recall reading where there are different strains of the virus including some ( probably what Magic has) that are extremely weak.

I have a relative who is HIV positive. He was diagnosed about 7 years ago. The drugs they now use have come a long way in controlling his blood but they still have nasty side effects that you really wouldn't want. One of the less dangerous but most painful side effects is that they promote the formation of kidney stones. They also do some wierd things with muscle development and digestive systems.

Aids is just as bad as it ever was, in some ways it is worse since the advent of the retroviral treatments and Majic Johnson. Johnson has a multimillion dollar bankroll to ensure that he gets the very best treatment available , as a result he does in fact look healthy and his viral load is probably too low to count. If he stops taking the drugs he will die. The stop taking the drugs option is not available for many people due to the fact that they can not afford the drugs in the first place. Outside of the states canada and westen europe the drugs are not widely available, from the point of being cost available, people in the states and canada can not afford them, how is a southafrican farmer or a hooker in Thailand going to get the money.

Another troubling thing that has started shoping up is HIV transmition is increasing in North American target groups becasue there is now a treatment that turns it from a death sentence into a cronic condition, so the what the hell they have drugs for that now attitude is showing up.

Amber - did you read the article that you referenced ??? She wasn't deported today - she was deported over three weeks ago. Nobody (unless you do) knows what the deported girl is doing. Her incredibly stupid vindictive husband has postulated that she can only turn tricks for a living.

Sorry if I sound anal about facts but if you are posting an article - why not read it first ?

I got interested in this case when I heard that her idiot husband has launched a lawsuit against the government (aka the taxpayers) because he married a prostitute in the Zanzibar where he worked as a bouncer and didn't bother to have his blushing bride checked for AIDS. So I am suppose to foot the bill for this stupidity ?

I file these kind of complaints with the same idiots that want us (taxpayers) to endure court costs trying to deport a spouse that they met on a two week vacation who is 30 years younger -and (guess what ?) was only after landed immigrant status. When are adults going to take responsibility for their own actions instead of running to the taxpayer to get involved?

I read it this morning and that just pissed me off, $30 million lawsuit against the government for his own stupidity, seriously, wtf?
I hope to hell the judge throws this case out the window within the first 10 seconds of the proceedings.
