While detectives try to determine how blunt force trauma killed a woman found dead in Sunalta, her friends believe her life in prostitution led to her tragic end.
Polina Kazanceva, a 19-year-old from Toronto, was found dead Wednesday about 4 a.m. by a taxi driver near 15 Ave. and 15 St. S.W.
Homicide Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus said she was visiting Calgary and had only been in the city about a week.
An autopsy has revealed Kazanceva died from blunt force trauma, but exactly how she died is still unknown.
“We are still trying to determine why she was in Calgary, who she has been associating with and why she was in that area,” he said.
“We are keeping an open mind, and looking at all possibilities — we do know the cause of death is blunt force trauma, we are now trying to establish the manner of death.”
Police are treating it as suspicious.
“We are trying to determine the events leading up to her body being found,” Andrus said.
Her friend Jennifer Perez said Kazanceva worked in prostitution and is convinced her death was related to that lifestyle and believes someone took her life.
“The reason she went to Calgary was to work, she was an escort, so that’s why I think it was related to whatever happened that night.
“I want them to find out who did this to her — I want to know what happened that night, it’s not fair to take someone’s life like that.
“She was really, really young.”
Though Perez never understood why Kazanceva chose to live that kind of life, she said she never judged her.
Kazanceva often left Toronto for work, but usually took a friend with her, she said.
Perez is remembering her as a kind, outgoing, family oriented woman, who would often help her mother take care of kids in her day home.
“She was a really, really good person, you could get along with her so well,” she said.
Andrus said her family knew she was in Calgary.
Police have knocked on doors in the neighbourhood and obtained CCTV video now being examined.
Anyone with information about Kazanceva’s whereabouts prior to her death is asked to call the homicide tip line at 403-428-8877.
