windows sound default

Well, I have a problem that I'm sure some guru here can help.

The sound on my windows 7 machine defaults to ATI Audio, which i believe is the computer speakers... maybe the monitor speakers... anyhow its crappy low sound. Whenever I reboot the system it defaults to this setting and I have to go into the control panel and reset it to my regular speakers.

The control panel section for sound says that i can set my speakers as default, but it invariably rresets to the crappy speakers when I reboot.

I suspect this is a setting in my config files, but I'm not sure where to find this.

Any suggestions?
