I'm in the market for a new laptop, I know there is a similar thread, but my question isn't about pricing. When I go to the stores and check out the windows experience, I find the price of the machine doesn't correspond to the quality of the windows experience. I'm talking about the control panel, sytem thing which rates the overall components for vista. Yeah I know vista sucks sh.......... Is that a good overall indicator of the quality of the machine in question? And will windows 7 reveal higher #'s than vista? ie 3.0 compared to 3.6 assuming 4.0 is "perfect"

thanks in advance

Why are you going to buy another Windows machine, when you're not happy with the Windows experience now? And waiting for Windows 7, hoping that it's going to be better is not the best thing to do, as MS's track record has not been very good lately!

If you're open minded, go to an Apple store (Fairview, Yorkdale, Eaton Centre or Sherway) and try it out for yourself. The staff there would be pleased to answer all of your questions and take you for a spin. True, a Mac costs more than a Windows machine, but IMHO you get much more (quality of OS and software included such as the iLife suite....iPhoto, iWeb, Garageband, iDVD, iMovie), and you get a higher quality machine as well (Mac laptops are renowned for their precision hardware and design....example: unibody design from a single piece of aluminum). Apple just announced a price drop on their new Macbook pro line, with the 13 inch laptop added to their Pro line. The white Macbook is available for $1149.00 and it is a very nice laptop (same one that I own), and the 13 inch Pro (much higher quality design and graphics card) is going for only $1399.00.

If you're seriously interested in a Mac after checking them out, PM me as I have access to an Apple store employee discount site that brings you lower prices. This is the same Apple store designed for employees of a large bank with staff discounts. You have to order online and get free delivery, and you get the same warranty as buying it in store. The 13 inch white Macbook goes for $1080.00 and the 13 inch Macbook Pro goes for $1315.00, giving you $70 to $80 dollar discounts!

thanks and I agree with you, I do own a mac by the way. But it doesn't answer the question about the rating system/good mach. bad mach. or the numbers don't mean shit? ie 3.0 vs 3.8 windows experience

I wouldn't even worry about the so called 'windows experience'.
The weakest link in your system pulls it down, be it memory, video card, cpu, 32bit versus 64 bit OS architecture, etc. Nothing to really worry about unless doing/using very demanding apps.

Win 7 looks to be an improvement on Vista but I never really had any problems with Vista anyways. I would also hold off buying till Win 7 comes installed rather than getting one now with Vista.

Another option is try out the 'Linux experience'....won't cost you a penny!...
Just order a free Ubuntu install CD and run it as Live CD to give it a test drive. Then if you like what you see, install as a dual boot setup so you can run either M$ or linux, you will have 2 OSs. You only need a 20GB partition for Ubuntu, the rest can be left for Windows.

Hi wp, I do run linux on my pc, I have rackmount drives that pullout of the pc. I'm running the eval of 7 now and I like it. Huge improvement like night/day in terms of speed, drivers etc. It just works. I will wait til the os comes out then shop around. I was just curious if I should use that as a measuring stick when purchasing.

I'm curious if you can even get a 4.0 windows experience rating.

Wonder if you would need a Quad Core, with a high end video card running a 64 bit OS with 12 gigs of ram to get that 4.0 rating....:D
