Was curious about W8 and played around with it a bit today.
W8 has different look but by hitting the 'alt' & 'tab' keys, it takes you to a more familiar Windows start page.
Not really sure what to make of W8.

On the good side M$ is offering the full Windows 8 Pro version right now for 70 bucks!
Best Buy didn't know how long this 70 buck offer will be in effect.

MONTREAL!!!
Was play testing the software for a good deal of time today. Pretty good software but..... you better get a touch screen monitor or you are going to really hate Windows 8.

Naw.....I'll stick with Linux. Besides W7 is seldom if ever used. Heck when a SSD was installed in my PC I didn't even bother to install W7.

However just wanted to see what W8 was all about....heck I even play around with Macs to see what they do. Always been a curious person wanting to see what is out there and IMHO Linux ROCKS and is the way to go!...;)

With Linux you get to play around with all the latest 'bleeding edge' technology years before M$ & Apple copy/steal it.....

Won't touching the screen leave fingermarks?
Probably and best to get a monitor best suited for that.
Touch is best suited for tablets and phones, just don't see the need to do that on your desktop or laptop as yet.

Does that mean that it is optimized for tablets?

W8 is designed to run on tablets, phones and PCs however your PC monitor has to accept touch technology.

I've been using Win 8 for months now. consumer preview and release preview and now final version. it's been smooth as silk, no hiccups, runs faster than Win7, boots much faster, has been compatible with every program I've used since XP and I rarely see the tablet enhanced interface except when I start my computer.

I have no hesitations in recomending it. only drawback may me the 5 minute learning curve because of start screen change and no start button ;)

No, it doesn't. You can use it with just a keyboard and mouse. However, it may not be the ideal experience. If your laptop has a sensitive input, you can use it to do many gestures on it, instead of the touch screen.

LOL!
I knew that and used W8 with keyboard and mouse and it works fine.
It's just that M$ is moving to 'touch tech' and your PC and monitor needs special modification to utilize 'touch' fully....;)
Using 'touch' on a 24"-27" PC monitor would become awkward after a short time ....unless they come up with an 'arm rest'!.....:biggrin1:

WOW!
This is a great deal!
You could then do a dual boot setup and have both W7 & W8 on your new PC.....;)

Ideal for those that want the touch experience without getting a touch screen or leaving greasy finger marks all over your monitor...

Did that on Sunday. I like it. Took about 15 minutes to download and install.

For $15 I figured not much to lose.

Eventually I will look into a tablet and the Surface has what I want...will wait for the newer more powerful one and some price deals.

Based on the front page of Windows 8 shown in all the advertising - it looks like a confusing Rubic's cube puzzle with live squares. If it's suppose to make life simpler, they haven't conveyed that idea to me looking at the front page.

I can futz around my mobile & tablet over time to gain the knowledge how to operate the device. I haven't the time to play with my operating system because I need Windows everyday for a variety of programs. Jumping into a new system, particularly one that looks this complex - is suicidal for my work.
