I got this computer from my brother who wasn't using it windows 7 was already loaded
You should ask your brother where he got the Windows 7. Are you connected to the Internet and have you received a warning directly from Microsoft?

If you have a Certificate of Authenticity (a sticker often placed on the outside of the computer case, with the Windows Product Key printed on it), you can activate Windows using that number. If there isn't any such sticker, you can buy a Product Key at places like Staples, or even directly from Microsoft.

Microsoft has been cracking down on bootleg Windows for years. I am surprise that yours didn't present a problem until now. There is no fix to it. You can buy a genuine copy of OEM Win7 on Amazon for around $70.

Yup!
Paranoid M$ scours the www looking for bootleg copies of Windoze and disables them when found until you pay for a legit version. A few years ago had a Corporate copy of XP Pro from work. It worked fine till its license expired. Then M$ disabled it due to this and said I would have to pay up if I wanted to continue using it! By then I had a legit W7 copy so didn't care about XP anymore.

Depends what you mean by all my stuff?

All my important stuff, music, pics, documents, etc, are backed up to an external HDD and thumbdrives by simply drag & dropping them. This always worked for both M$ and Linux with no issues.

External HD seems like the way to go. Or, in your case you were able to still preserve Windows 7 by partitioning your drive.

W7 was already dual booted with Linux on a HDD, so I left that as it was, which kept W7 on the PC as it was.
Had an old SSD in the PC and put W10 on that SSD, so no partitioning was required.
Then added another newer SSD that has a newer Linux OS.

Therefore now have a Quad boot system and all 4 OSs run fine. Linux is amazing and auto reconfigures the boot loader to show all 4 OS whenever you boot up. This way you can select any of the 4 to start up. If you select none, by default the newest Linux version starts up by default.
