There's more to the story than the headline. I have less sympathy after I read that it was the ref who pulled a knife and stabbed the player to death. The spectators then enacted mob vengeance on the ref.

Completely different context than what the headline would lead you to believe.

That said, this is why I still consider Brazil to be a third world country.

Agree. I was just shocked by the fact that the stabbing and beheading happened right in the field ! I am also surprised nobody filmed it with their phones.

Do you really think there is any risk that a referee selected to officiate a World Cup match would pull a knife on a player and kill him during the match? At the World Cup, the referees are selected by FIFA and come from all over the world. No 20-year-old knife wielding punk from the backwoods of Northern Brazil is going to be refereeing a World Cup match. So I don't see any connection to the FIFA tournament next year.

what a dumb question? this was just a neighbourhood league with thug kids playing a game.. not some high profile match with fifa trained referees, stadium full of security.

You'll never see an international fifa match where a ref gets into a fist fight with a player, pulls out a knife to stab him ><
