Will The Recent Shooting In Ottawa Allow For Better Gun Laws

In light of the tragic shootings in Ottawa today don't you think it would be smart if Canada passed revised Gun Laws to allow for citizens to protect themselves ? I read that Switzerland has some of the lowest shooting incidents in the World but everyone is legally allowed to carry weapons. This seems to me to make a lot of sense.

What do you think ?

BS

Better? Not as you/I would define it! lol

I understand that the shooter today used a hunting rifle. countdown to renewed cries for a long-gun registery in 5-4-3-2-.....

BS. Irrelevant.
1. There were plenty of armed people around the parliament. More armed citizens on the streets would have changed nothing in this particular incident.
2. How can the long gun registry stop the shooter who is shooting form a properly registered legally owned gun?
This incident is irrelevant. For both sides.

The BS is that you are using logic in a rational analysis.

That is irrelevant to the anti-gun crowd.

For our kids.... lol

If anything there will be a push for more gun control since the politicians don't have a solution and want to appear to be doing something, even if it wont do shit and put the general public at even more risk. After all they care about themselves, we're just the suckers paying their salaries and retirement fund.

Agreed except that criminals won't register a long arm if the gun registry returns.

Let's not use Archie Bunker logic as a knee jerk reaction (arm all airline passengers with a gun to eliminate armed hijackings).

At the same time, I don't think this is a gun control issue (or priority) and we shouldn't change anything for now.

The problem is that Harper has made firearms a key peg in his re-election platform. The Cons announced a few months ago some proposed revisions in the firearms act designed to appease their rural base.

This really screws that up!

What does the first part of that sentence and the last part have to do with one another?

Also, Switzerland and Canada are almost identical in terms of gun-related homicides. Unless you are specifically referring to big media-grabbing headlines.

Maybe. We shall see how the perp got his gun and whether or not he was an anomaly or terrorist.

Wouldn't it be the height of irony if Harper got shot with his own gun law?

BTW: The solders at the war memorial carry toy guns. They don't stand a chance against someone with a real rifle.

You answered a lingering question in my mind with your 'BTW'. That's too bad. Damn. But Corporal Cirillo would've been taken by surprise perhaps.

Harper personally killed the long gun registry, so its not likely he'd bring it back or any stricter gun laws.
More likely he'll try to use it to ram through more legislation enacting more spying and taking away our freedoms in the name of security.

He won't bring it back. But events like this will make it harder for his MPs to sell proposed laws to loosen transport regs and such.

They would carry real firearms, but without the breech mechanism and without ammunition.

That's so they don't go postal all of a sudden, since the mere handling of such weapons turns people into raving maniacs. //sarcasm off// That's why the gun grabbers want to eliminate guns from society: because in their minds, the majority of people fit into their definition of the lowest (absolutely lowest) common denominator: that the average person is stupid, irresponsible and inherently violent. (Hey! isn't the latter what Swedish radical feminists characterize men as?)

It's not even "loosening" transportation regulations, it's making them make sense; it's completely asinine to require a separate Authorization to Transport when a licensed individual wants to take their registered firearm to a firing range or gunsmith. Including that authority into the license eliminates an unnecessary, expensive, bureaucratic process that does absolutely nothing to enhance public safety.
