Go Mel, go!

Most likely he'll go. Too bad he couldn't take the 'megacity' with him. He's been a dud and so has the amalgamation.

Mel...

From where I sit here in Hamilton where we have had nothing but dud's since Vick Copps, Mel is the biggest dud of them all and has done nothing for TO and should go. Geez after that remark about possibly being boilded in a pot and eaten in Africa and bringing in the military after that big snow storm a couple of years ago and now his admissions in the inquiry on the computer contract scandal sealed the deal as far as I am concerned - the guys a flake. That's my humble opinion.

He'll stay.

Why would the part of the brain that regulates common sence all of a sudden kick in? He is a media slut. Rather than make the announcment humbly, he set a date just to see how much coverage he could get before he makes decision.

Who's a bigger ******* than Mel lastman?????

Who after Mel?

When he goes, who will replace him? The candidates -- declared and hopeful -- look pretty bleak.

General Schwarzkopf would be good but I'm not sure he wants to come.

Mel

Mel's time is up and he knows it. He scheduled a press conference well in advance just to get a final gauge from the polls. The people have rejected him. He was the right person to be mayor at the right time. Afterall, he's a salesman. No one before him was any better at cutting deals at the municipal level. He sold the MegaCity concept, but damaged the Olympic bid. He dug a hole of scandals too big to get out of & buffooned his way thru this last term. Everybody got tired of his act. This time, there are more higher profile "name" candidates for the next election (Hall, Jacobek, Nunziata, possibly Tory) & Mel cannot take on all of them. Remember he didn't have any competition the last 2 elections. He will bow out gracefully.

Mel's a (cheap furniture) salesman first and a politician second. Despite his gaffes, I actually don't believe he's stupid. He doesn't think before he says & does things, but I don't consider him to be dumb or anything. Given that, I think he does realize that he's past his best before date and that Toronto voters will kick him out if he tries to run again.

It's too bad we don't have a strong candidate (yet?). It's time for someone to really lead Toronto into the 21st century. Rudy Guiliani did it in New York and the mayor in Paris, France (can't recall his name) has done a decent job thus far.

say what you want, the guy's not boring.

As far as guiliani goes, he was considered by many a bit of a dick before 911.

Yes, i will admit, he really picked up the pieces after 911, but he was also rather anti sex trade too if i recall.

A guy like him would shut the hobby down in toronto.

True - Rudy was largely destined for political oblivion prior to 911. But his accomplishments stand - he reclaimed Times Square from the seedy sex shops and turned it into a vibrant city centre.

I don't think he was necessarily anti-sex; he just wanted to clean up parts of town and make them more friendly to everyone. Personally I wouldn't mind if Toronto's mayor did the same thing along Yonge Street by the Eaton Centre. I like dropping by those sex shops every so often, but I really wouldn't miss them if they were replaced by some nicer stores. It's easier to get your porn off the web these days anyway.
