why is durham lumped in with kingston/ottawa?

So true. I had some tenants in Oshawa that had an entire wall display of ball caps. I also have a friend that lives in Oshawa who I would estimate spends at least $1,000/year on ball caps. He was once asked to remove his cap when we went to Jillys. Not passing the dress code in Jillys - now that is saying something.
