To some degree it is because the left leaning intelligentsia have insinuated themselves into positions of control and influence. The abundant public subsidy and the attendant lack of a profit motive remove accountability. The subsidy is 1.1 billion. The culture becomes one of imperious self-righteousness, exemplified in their obstruction of attempts to examine costs via the Freedom of Information act.

It is time for the government to set a 5 year phase out of public funding. CBC should become self -supporting with a mandate to become a public company with normal strictures and requirements. In this electronic day and age they should compete and be rewarded with viewership commensurate with the quality that they deliver.

"The National" is the most watched Canadian news cast in Canada. I find it informative.

CBC is not public television. Only TVOntario can be compared to PBS in the USA as public broadcasters.
CBC and BBC are publicly funded, so setting aside your banal little correction, guess what public funding makes CBC and BBC?

The radio service is excellent, in my opinion. I listen to a lot of BBC and ABC too, and they have some great stuff as well.

Alex, before you ask why CBC is so bad, why don't you tell us why you think it is bad? As you may guess, I'm a fan of CBC news, on TV and radio. I've read Rick Salutin's opinion piece linked to in this thread. While I accept some of his points (eg. coverage of celebrity news on the National), I completely disagree with others (eg. his suggestion that the panel discussions are a means to save money). He also ignores the excellent group of correspondents that work for CBC news.

But I'd like to hear what you have to say about it. Why do you think that CBC news is bad?

I also enjoy the senior service, commercial free for starters.

I've never listened to NPR much, so can't comment on NPR vs the rest.

When the network is finally weaned from the public teat, you will be able to donate your personal funds to the poor folks at the CBC and maybe they will send you a mug with the National logo on it.

At one time the CBC served a useful purpose - Back when the majority of folks had no means of getting adequate TV reception. Those days are long gone and the network has become a haven for left leaning elitists and con artists.

I would like to say "Let the lefties support it". However we know that they will not give one red cent, similar to their complete lack of support when the poor librarians went on strike - How many of them showed up for that? The answer is zero and that is how much they would offer in monetary support to the CBC.

Everyone defending the CBC is focused on the news. OK, so I agree, the CBC news programming is actually quite respectable. But I challenge you to sit through an episode of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" without wanting to shoot yourself.

The problem with the CBC is that it tries to get/set cultural norms using tax dollars taken from the pockets of Canadian taxpayers. It's not so much public television (funding is contributed) as it is state-run-television (funding is taken) which smacks of banana republics and former soviet-bloc countries.

Culture that cannot survive does not deserve to survive and the idea of the government using my tax dollars to explain my culture to me is just plain offensive. The despots in Quebec shouldn't be legislating language, and the CBC shouldn't be using my tax dollars to produce shit in the interests of promoting some asshole civil servant's vision of Canadian culture.

We're a very young country relative to most of our neighbours. I remember a long time ago I was talking to some lowest-common-denominator from the US who was making fun of the FLQ crisis. My response was "well when your country was roughly the age of this country you were in a full-scale civil war. Relatively speaking we're doing quite well at this stage"

We're Canadian, give is time and we'll figure it out - without the CBC picking our pockets to tell us what's Canadian.

That's what is wrong with the CBC.

CBC Radio is terrific...shows like As it Happens, The Debaters, Cross Country checkup are very good. I'm far from a left-winger...but these shows are interesting and informative...compared to Talk Radio on Newstalk 1010 and AM640, which is infotainment in my opinion
