Why do strippers perform in the dark?

This is the burning question of our age.

Is it the SC managers? There must be many dancers who love being in the live entertainment business, the excitement of being on stage, the applause, the bright lights -- but the stingy management is saving a buck on the hydro.

Or is it the ladies? Maybe the manager really does want the bright lights - this is show-biz after all - but the dancers, deep down, feel shy about men seeing them with their clothes off, and they force the poor old management to keep the place in semi-darkness.

Or is it the customers? But have you ever come across a guy watching a strip show who actually prefers not to be able to see the dancers? I guess there must be some shy sensitive men, who find semi-darkness more romantic. But why do strip clubs concentrate so much on giving the delicate bashful customer what he wants? Why don't strip clubs, of all places, cater for the man who actually likes to SEE bare women.

Perhaps it's just me. But my guess is there are lotsa men in the audience, who find the naked female form to be the source of all pleasure and beauty.

So, strip clubs, please turn up the lights!

Shakespeare said: Under bright lights, a beautiful woman, like fine jewellery, sparkles with radiance. Hey, there's an idea if someone wants a research project: did strippers perform in semi-darkness in Shakespeare's day, same as they do now?

There's a little something called ambience. You want bright lights? Go to Stratford.
If you prefer something a little more subtle, you will find not only strip clubs but also most bars adjust their lighting to set the mood as the evening progresses. A couple of beers, low lights, and everyone is relaxed.
After last call, bright lights come on, music goes off and everyone starts squinting.
You can ask all you want, the lights are staying that way for a reason.

the darker it is the less likely the flaws of the dancers will be seen
plus if you can't see too well then your more likely to get a personal dance so you can see things up close

Yes, but the lighting is so dim most of the time that you can't see much of the bare dancer after the clothes come off! I remember sitting right by the stage in Bunnies years ago, watched 4 or 5 dancers and then went home because I couldn't see the "important areas" when they finally were nude. The lighting, or lack of it, made it impossible. What's the point? I used to love going to WAGG because the lighting was exceptional, not too dim, but bright enough so you could see every delicious aspect of the gorgeous dancers they usually had, but after the remodeling 2 or 3 years ago, the lighting got dim and I had the same experience as Bunnies, so even though it was still packed in there with customers last time I was there, I see no point in going anymore. I'm with ironmonger on this one.

Exactly what I was going to say.....scars, C-sections, and best of all cellulite...but they still can't hide an ugly face!

That's what the booze is for!

No lights also makes it more difficult for the strippers to see us ugly guys handing them bills. They may need the perception of something to get excited about too.

I was in the CB on Thursday and it seemed to be even darker than usual. I often pick a lady for a private dance from what I see on stage. With the lighting getting even lower this is no longer an option. Ladies, this is your opportunity to advertise yourselves so speak to management and ask them to turn up the lighting so we can at least see you.

Miranda - Autumn was on stage on Thursday and with a body like that I don't think she is shy.

But GB -- how can they not have noticed that if there's a slight blemish, dim lighting doesn't cover it up, it accentuates it. High contrast lighting, where a single light source shines sideways across the person, is the worst. The Greeks would never have gone to rescue Helen of Troy, if they'd shone spotlights across her body in a dim room.

Women look infinitely BETTER, not worse, under bright, even lighting - especially women with blemishes, wrinkles, stretch marks, or a bit of cellulite. Every photographer knows that. You never see a Playboy centrefold lit from the side or from above by a single spotlight. They dont film porn movies in murky gloom, nor any kind of movies where they want the person to look glamorous.

There must be some very important and influential clown in the business, who thinks the kind of man who attends strip clubs prefers to see real live naked women in dingy semi-darkness. He evidently thinks we would stay away, and hang onto our money, if we could actually make out those body parts of the dancers that we find so delightful.

it's dark in SC's because they want you to PAY to see the 'goods' up close and personal!

The darkness helps the black lights, its the black lights that give the dancer's the forgiveness, the black lights highlight outfits (and hair, sometimes making blondes look green) and helps to hide imperfections.

It all comes down to atmosphere, neither the guys nor girls would want a bright club, they want a club that feels just right, and thats a hard medium to balance.

Electricity is expensive. You don't want to see beer prices go up to $10/bottle, do you?
