Never underestimate the influence of Catholic church's portryal
of Jesus's appearance. If Christ turned out to be nothing like the
Jesus of the tradition things could be a lot different.
I think they have a rough idea of his image. Aren't the popular images we see of Jesus from what has come down through the ages or is that strictly of European origins? If the Shroud of Turin has any validity, it certainly corroborates the existing popular image.
