The cost of upgrading to Windows 7 on your laptop is probably not worth it unless it is a year old or so. For the cost of a new laptop with the OS on it you are way better off. Check out some of the prices lately. They have never been better. I'm a MS Partner and have been using Windows 7 from the Beta version. All I can tell you is I love it. Very stable and everything runs nice.

Nothing wrong with XP.
I have a PC still running XP, a laptop with Vista and a newer desktop with 64 bit Win7. All run great with NO problems but Linux is my main OS which runs even better. IMHO there is no pressing reason to upgrade to W7 but when you do make sure it's the 64 bit version.

That above Lenovo is nice.
The only knock, is it lacks an HDMI Output and should have at least 4GB DDR3 RAM instead of 2GB.

You want an HDMI port so you can plug the laptop into any large screen HDTV, which will turn it into a 'super smart' HDTV capable of accepting and displaying a 1080p high-definition signal.

What the article did not say is what level of support will be provided for WinXP: sure, you can buy a Win7 COA and run it as WinXP, but that doesn't automatically mean they'll provide patches for WinXP.

Does anyone have a definitive statement from Microsoft?

Run the XP system until they stop Supporting it. Save up some cash. By 2020 they will already find and resolve most of the glitches out of win7. Then upgrade. Currently running XP, will not upgrade until system dies or is obsolete.

By 2020 W7 will be history.
Windows 8 will be launched sometime in mid-late 2012. By 2020 who knows what Windows version will be out.

W8 has some interesting features like Windows To Go.

The “Windows To Go” seems to be an exciting feature that basically allows Windows 8 to boot from a USB device (called as Live USB), including user’s programs, settings and files. The feature is designed to work with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and on both legacy NIOS and UDFI firmware. However, Microsoft says that a user will not be able to “Hibernate” with this feature.

“Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8 that enables enterprise administrators to create USB drives containing complete, managed Windows images that users can use to boot and run Windows on any Windows 7 or Windows 8 capable computer. Windows To Go makes it possible for employees to use a managed device whether they work from home, a client office or in a free seating environment. This session will discuss Windows To Go, its hardware requirements and building compatible and complementary software.”


“Windows To Go” is a basically a feature stolen from Linux which has had this capability for a few years now.
It's a pretty neat feature....and of course all FREE for us using Linux...:cool:

Also xp will propably run faster on a older laptop than 7 because of the graphics ..aero etc. But if the laptop is powerful...

the only reason i wanted to start using windows 7 was to get used to it. so if someone i knew had troubles i could help. more to the point: why not upgrade? cost? ok. that's fair. otherwise, i believe there is no downside.

I have been using XP for years. Tried Windows 7 recently on a new computer and didn't like it. Maybe, I should have given it a longer trial period.

It's been my experience that with every new version of windows I hated it (with the exception of windows 95, which was a major leap forward) but after a few weeks I got used to it and always preferred it over the earlier versions. Just takes time to get used to the changes.
A lot of people complained about Vista in particular but I never had any issues with it.

I am happy with Vista, except for the incredibly long boot time. 7 has a new windows explorer, and it is not quite possible to get the old hierarchical file view.

"PC World reports that Windows XP lost more than 11 percent of its share from September to December 2011, to post a December average of 46.5 percent, a new low for the aged OS as users have gotten Microsoft's message that the operating system should be retired (^PC World). Figures indicate that Windows 7 will become the most widely used version in April, several months earlier than previous estimates. Two months ago, as Microsoft quietly celebrated the 10th anniversary of XP's retail launch (^arstechnica.com), the company touted the motto 'Standing still is falling behind' to promote Windows 7 and demote XP. In July, Microsoft told customers it was 'time to move on' from XP (PC World), reminding everyone that the OS would exit all support in April 2014. Before that, the Internet Explorer team had dismissed XP as the 'lowest common denominator' when they explained why it wouldn't run IE9. The deadline for ditching Windows XP is in April 2014, when Microsoft stops patching the operating system. Not saying I totally agree, but I thought it was a fitting compilation of articles as to the subject. Most interesting: April 2014 is when MS is giving up on patches... guess I need a new system before then!

Thanks, do I need to upgrade to IE 8 first?

P.S. I normally use Firefox 6 as my browser so my Internet Explorer is still 6 and haven't upgraded to 8 yet.

It'll offer you the upgrade to the latest IE (as just another set of patches, iirc), but you can decline. Careful tho - it's easy enough to miss the chance to decline.

I always update to the latest IE version, even though IE is seldom if ever used. You just never know when it may be needed.
