I have a linksys wireless-G router I don't remember the model number of the top of my head but anyway,

I am trying to set my room as my webcam studio for when I do webcam shows but the damn thing is not connecting properly to the router that is in the living room. I am trying to avoid having a long ass cord come from the living room, pass the kitchen and too the bedroom since I am renting it does not make sense to do all the work to have the wires all around the place.

So I am wondering If I need to get a new router or buy a 50 or 100 feet Ethernet cable.

If you don't mind my thoughts...

My router does both. I took off the antennas. My wires are hooked up under my desk and out of my way. You can buy these adhesive products anywhere.

Wireless can be easily scanned.

Good luck!:)

Do a test one with the wired connection and one without.

See if there is a noticeable difference. If there isn't then go with what you have.

Just returned a $50 linksys wireless-G router.
Was using a cheap $20 Belkin wireless-G router that I thought wasn't performing well. Picked the linksys wireless-G router because it was rated so well. It ends up the linksys wireless-G router performed more poorly than the Belkin router. When I returned the linksys and mentioned the poor performance, the techie clerk said he wasn't surprised since he thought Belkin was a better router than linksys anyways.

Of course a hardwired setup ran far better than both wireless routers which were eratic at times. If you can hide the cable this is the way to go.
Ethernet cable is very cheap online, they rip you off in the stores.

Wireless Router is fine for a time, but I always find my connection slower than when I use my cable, and my cable connection NEVER drops.

So if you don't mind loosing your connection and having to reboot your router go wireless, otherwise just use a long cable.

Do you mean that you are running a wireless web cam in the studio like this and it's not connecting to the router in the living room ? :

Or you are running a laptop with a USB webcam in the studio and using wireless to connect to the router in the living room?

Or are trying to connect the linksys router in the studio using wireless to another router in the living room?

In an apartment building with a lot of people, usually everyone is using the same default channel (ch 6), so there is a lot of interference. Also, cordless 2.4 Ghz phones that your neighbors might be using will also interfere with the signal. You might have to play round with the channels until you find one that is clear.

This company does not ship to destinations outside of the US (and Puerto Rico).
Even if they did, most likely they ship via UPS so add $35+ for brokerage, taxes, etc. Also you can get factorydirect and tigerdirect type prices at most local computer outlets (not futureshop, staples, bestbuy, etc).

Most routers do have the same hardware inside of it as there is only a few companies that make the chipsets.. Broadcom, Atheros are the main guys I think. Anyways ya the Linksys sucks balls if it's the WRT54Gv5 and above as the vxworks OS on them reboots when there is heavy traffic. I like Belkin as one of you said cause I have large amounts of traffic going through with the one in my office and it maybe needs a reboot once every 2 months.

maybe it's the building, since I have more floors then my old place why my router is being soo funny. I guess it true since there a lot of buzzing on my home phone.

I have a laptop hooked up to a usb video capture device. I already have a lot of cords running around my apartment I am trying to keep the cord traffic level down.

Try changing the default channel in the Linksys:
http://www.ezinstructions.com/wrt54gsetup.html

The two situations I ran into before in apts buildings were:
A. everyone is using the default channel 6. In the studio, your next door neighbor might also have a wireless router on Ch6 and since it's closer to you than the one in your living room, it is wiping out your signal. Your laptop will find the new channel automatically. The other variation of this is if you used the Linksys right out of the box and left the SSID as "default". There might be 20 other people in the building using the same "default" SSID, so you might have accidentally connected into a neighbor's Linksys instead of your own. The laptop may also be switching back and forth between each "default" SSID in range. Make sure you aren't using an SSID called "default".
B. 2.4 GHz wireless phones used by neighbors. They have the same channels as wifi. Some phones are very aggressive in picking channels. You'll have to change the channel in the Linksys till you find one thats clear. The only other solution is move to a 802.11a system. Your laptop wireless will need to support 802.11A and you'll have to get a wireless router that supports 802.11a (label would say 802.11 A,B,G support). If you are using 802.11N (assuming your laptop has N support as well), you might have to disable "N". It goes faster by using multiple channels at the same time and if you are getting interference on some channels then it's going to be intermittent.

Any local small computer store has cheaper prices for ethernet cables, over the big chain stores and TigerDirect.

If you're doing a camshow, hardwire it, as opposed to wireless.
Less B.S. than wireless.
