900 miles a year?
That's about 2.5 miles a day.
NEVER do most americans walk that much.
Well, remember the study said 'average'. That means one walks 5 miles a day and another 0. Makes an average of 2.5.
You'd actually be surprised at how far one does walk in a day. Take people who live and work in Mahatton for instance. Most don't even have a licence let alone drive. One of the many times I was there on business I met some people who lived there and they said, for the most part, if you live less than 8 blocks from where you work, you don't even take the bus, they walk.
When I worked in an office downtown and I took the bus I figured out I walked about 2 miles a day or more during the summer. It was 2 blocks to the bus stop, 2 blocks from the bus to the subway. 2 blocks from the subway to the elevator to my floor. So add that up and it's 6 blocks just to get to my office never mind how much I walked around while there.
