Please don't take this the wrong way ...

With absolutely no disrespect intended, why do people get tatoos? I can appreciate artwork and the concepts of self expression and individuality. That's all fine. But how does a tatoo, artistically designed or otherwise, express your individuality any more than the way you already carry yourself in society? Why do you choose to inscribe permanent markings, sometimes very prominently on your body? What drives you to do this?

Just curious ... no flames please.

No offense taken. That's a good question -- why? When I was young I thought it was "cool" and rock starts like Gun's n Roses did it. But I was told when I got old I'd hate them. I heard stories of people doing it when they were young and then regreting it when they were old - or found themselves in a profession which it would look bad - like a banker or something.

So I waited.... and waited.... now I'm 34.

Still wanted one - still thought it was cool.

So I did it.

Hurt a LOT.

Don't regret it.

Xarir,

Some insight for you :MBB - Branding / Tattoo thread ( if you want to skip to the chase try mine, Picky [ the opposing view ] and Charlatan's posts in particular )

I think people have different motivations and it's almost impossible to help someone else understand.

For me it was very personal and actually helped me through a difficult time in my life.

Some snippets of my perspective ...

From my posts in that MBB thread: ... for some people a tattoo is a very personal thing ( as you alluded to ) as opposed to a fashion statement or to look cool. I can't imagine walking into a tattoo parlour and getting something imprinted in my skin for the rest of my life that someone else designed with little significance ( that's not to judge others who do - It's just what feels right for me ). It would bear no real meaning to me. For me it was extremely personal and the concept, design and meaning were all decided by me. It was a symbol of personal commitment among other things.

Oddly enough I managed to make it to the age of , well ... over 30, before getting one, which considering some of my peer groups and lifestyle at times, is a miracle.
Hell, if I had got every tattoo I ever vaguely or relatively seriously thought of getting throughout my life, I'd have a snake rapped around my whole arm, confederate flags, peace signs, anarchy symbols, hostas, trees, frogs, tree-frogs, a grim reaper drinking Molson Ex, naked chicks - not too cheesy, skulls, biohazard symbols, the third eye, dope leafs, ( maybe even the kitchen sink ) etc etc ... I'd be a walking cliché & contradiction of a map of my life ...

I must say that Stainless is a most excellent establishment as is passage and Urban Primitive.

That really is some very nice work there Shcilli.

the symbology is rich and its nicely and sharply done with clean lines. I like that. it flows well.
