In a place far, far away

Ishika Yadavalli recalled the moment a mom asked her to give up her $7,000 business class seat to switch with her daughter who was sitting in economy.

I would say of course. After you e-transfer me $8,000 happy to sway seats.

This goes back about 15 years. While I was married my family took a vacation trip to Europe.

There was me, my wife, and our two children, who were both under 16.

I had enough Aeroplan points for 2 executive class seats, and wasn't willing to pay for 2 more.

So i bought economy class tickets for my wife and myself, as for us it was unthinkable to sit in executive class with our kids sitting in economy.

That was still less expensive than 4 economy class seats.

The hitch was, while we could board together, we were not allowed to escort them off the plane, due to their ages.

An airport agent had to deboard them upon arrival, and we were then allowed to meet up once inside the arrival lounge...

I’d answer this request with two words
I would say, " You do realize that this seat cost thousands more than that seat, so it is not a reasonable request, you are basically asking me to GIVE you thousands of dollars."

Also, I would ask her why she accepted the upgrade, if she was so concerned about not sitting with her daughter.

If it's in the same class sure, but if it involves me going down a class then no (and that's exactly what I'd say).

I don’t fly often and have never had the displeasure of sharing a plane with the kinds of people who get featured on viral stories like this.

It is a mild phobia of mine to be stuck on a flying metal tube for hours with a complete whackjob or embarrassing drama queen. I’m more afraid of that than any safety issues with the plane.

To answer the question: I’d politely tell her to go fuck herself without saying those exact words. Wouldn’t want to escalate the situation with someone who I can already tell doesn’t have her head on straight.

I've only had to switch once in business class.
But I told them, that I am not sitting in the middle aisle with 2 side by side seats.
I told them if it is on the other aisle I will.
Thankfully it was. lol.

Recent trip across the Atlantic and a lady was in my windows seat. As I ended up with the aisle seat I didn't worry over it for that bit of extra leg real estate. And Wifey would need to get a few times anyway midflight.

Then the FA comes by hands me a blanket, pillow, extra snacks and earphones. Turns out the lady who stole my seat had paid for little upgrades. I just used them and didn't say a word.

Karma be good.

One thing though, this woman seems to thrive on all kinds of social media attention, so I wonder how much of this is true, or whether it is contrived to some extent.

I'll pay for leg room (or get it free due to my ff status) and a polite and sympathetic "no, I'm sorry, I paid extra for this seat" always works.
Business class for coach? No way in hell there. I could not imagine the balls it would take to even ask someone that question. Like someone must be making TikTok content.
