if you go to one of those used record stores where they sell used dvds, movies. vhs, and records. they have alot on queen st. and there's one next to the worlds biggest book store on yonge st. you might get a good lot of them sold.

might not be the best suggestion. don't nkow how much they're worth exactly.

Some are no longer around. However, that is a gerat idea. There are also some collectors in flea markets, as well.

At all costs, avoid places like Value Village, etc. if you want to make any money.

Simon, I might know of a few god colelctors who might be able to help you. There may also be Planet of Sound on Queen St. East who could suggest to you a sol;ution or a person.

They might be bale to help.

i would agree with you for half of them. just old classic rock. the part that i don't know about is the thick old ones that play on an old hand crank phonograph. classical and opera.

You can try Kops Records at 229 Queen West. Martin and Ian will give you a fair price for rock, pop, blues, soul, etc. Don't know if they have any interest in classical. They will pay a premium for collectibles if it fits their market.

After them, take the remainder to Sonic Boom, located in separate premises in the Honest Ed building. Entrance is on Bathurst just south of Bloor. Again they will give you a fair price, but no premium for collectibles.

After that, if they're not interested in some or all of them, I really don't know where you'll get any significant cash for the balance of the records.

There are people who really enjoy antique recordings. I even have a stylus for a Shure M44 that will play 78 RPM records. Don't be surprised if you find a buyer for the older ones. It depends on who the artist was on the recordings.

I Forgot about Kops. There are also collectible shows every 6 months or so.

Select a few then search the titles on Ebay, most records have a "buy it now" sale price, this will give you an idea of retail value if you sold them individually. Should help you figure out an asking price for the lot.

As somebody with a large record collection (2000 or so) and a large comic collection here's what I'd suggest.

1) check out and talk to owners of record stores..... look for stores that sell classical vinyl.

http://www.blogto.com/toronto/the_best_vinyl_record_stores_in_toronto/

2) there are record shows that come through toronto a few times a year and other cities in southern ontario where vendors rent out a banquet hall and ply their wares.

3) kijiji and craigslist

4) ebay

There are two strategies...... sell bulk at a low price per record or try and sell them individually at market value.

What's your time worth to you?

Shipping vinyl will eat profits very quickly.

I sold my entire comic colleciton and had to break it up into individual title sets and probably sold them at about $1 and issue. Still made a few thousand over a few months. Now sure I could have made much more money if I wanted to wait for the right buyer who's willing to pay top dollar but that could take years.

I know I haven't offered much in terms of new information but my big advice is unless you are wiling to put a lot of time and effort into this endeavour erase all thoughts of big money.

Even at the record shows you can haggle and find good deals. The market is geared towards lowballers unless you have a lot of patience or have truly rare/valuable stuff.

Value Village and other thrift stores used to be filled with old classical vinyl when everyone was cleaning out their closets. Now not so much.

Keep in mind a dealer will offer you less that what he will sell for.

In the case of comics you'd be LUCKY to get 25 cents per issue many places will over as low as 5 to 10 cents.

Same is likely true of record dealers.

Pawnshops are similar as well. In the case of blu rays they will pays as much as 2 to 3 per movie. But for records far less than that given that when I see records in pawnshops they are priced less than blu rays so obviously they must offer less than blu rays.

Just be happy that it's money you didn't expect to have even if it's a small amount.

Alternatively give it to a friend who you know would enjoy it.

Just another resource/reference.
http://www.musicstack.com/

There is a little "Price Guide" box on the right so you can search through their sales history by artist.

Give them to a charity so you can write them off as a charitable donation.

If they're worth 10K you can claim that as their value & reduce your tax payments by a few thousand dollars over the next 5 years.

In order for that to happen, the records need to be appraised. How much would that cost? Is it worth the trouble?
