You see for me, 'thinking' and 'common sense' are 2 different things. Thinking is logic in your conscious and subconscious mind (meaning work or working at getting that) and Common Sense is simple and FREE.

a decision that one researcher described as “unwise.”
Unwise!?! *LMFAO*
So, I'm leaning more towards... WHERE THE FARK WAS THEIR COMMON SENSE? It doesn't take a freakin' genius to see certain situations don't need to be thought about because common sense should just click in, and it's obvious that no one had any. Perhaps I should send them an email telling them that common sense is free and you don't get it in any school.

There was no "intellectual elite" Langeweile in any of these people.

Common sense free? yes...simple? no ...widely used? not sure.
In any case you are right.

In a van down by the river
I have read that some time ago a scientist dug up some victims of the "Spanish Flu" somewhere in the arctic.
He wanted to find out more about the virus. I wonder if the CDC got the virus from him or if they had it before.
In any case, why would you want to tempt faith??

Simple. Shit happens. And it is assumed that the lab personel are qualified. And not some afrimitive action mishap.

That just goes to show you:

You can be intelligent, but that doesn't mean you're smart!

There are several scary aspects to this:

  • This was supposed to be part of a test of lab competence for accreditation. Testers should do better, never mind the labs
  • The 'deadly' sample was not detected as such by any lab as part of the test. "That wasn't part of the test," is clearly not good enough
  • A lab error in BC which mixed the H2N2 sample with a patient's sample was the reason the 'deadly' sample was discovered. Errors are not good, especially with unidentified, possibly deadly viruses
  • That lab couldn't figure out its own mistake, but had to send the contaminated sample to the 'big boys' to figure out. Good for the 'big boys', but better work in BC should have done it

I'd say the shipping of 'deadly' viruses is the least worrisome aspect of the incident. It will have to happen more and more if the entire world—or even just one country, province or city—is going to reap the benefits of the super science that deals with this stuff. We can't have labs that can isolate SARS level viruses on every block.

But the fact that the system—and there actually is a system involved—remained unaware for so long of a system-wide error should be deeply disturbing. What makes effective systems is self-monitoring awareness, and if the system we're relying on to keep us safe can't keep track of itself, we're in trouble. We need better managers here (and everywhere) for sure.
