Looking to buy a single cup coffee maker for my SO. She likes coffee.....me not so much. That being said, I hear a lot about those Kurig (sp) type deals. Other machines you buy the beans. Need some direction on which you think is best and why.

Thanks

For just a small amount of coffee i would recommend the Bodum french press.

I have been using a Keurig for years and have been happy with performance, durability, and the variety of k-cups available. Just dont get the entry level model. Go with an upgraded version that has the water tank. Worth the extra $20 to have a delicious cup in 30 seconds (as opposed to 120 seconds with keurig mini). Not sure what the top of the line models give you for the extra $40, but worth exploring. Enjoy
Another benefit of the Keurig is that you can get the K-cup adapter and use any coffee blend that you want. Also, reliability is much better with the Keurig than with Tassimo.

Did research on Tassimo, Dolce, and Keurig before I bought mine.
Tassimo: good mid-range, good selection - good choice if variety is more important than quality.
Dolce: best quality of coffee - very restricted variety for hot chocolate, tea, etc.
Keurig: great quality coffee (second to Dolce), excellent selections (hot chocolates, tea, huge variety of flavoured coffee), also mykcup is excellent for using your own grounds - K-Cups available in a wide range of stores.

My choice: Keurig. Have not looked back. Many family members have also purchased one after tasting the coffee from mine.

Another vote for Keurig.
I have the Breville model. Every once in a while you have to turn it upside down and spank it. Seems to get an air bubble block. But a good machine.
Stock up on the EightOClock Coffee beans when they go on sale twice a year, freeze them and grind your own as required. No wasted coffee.
Lowes sell a good grinder by Hamilton-Beach. All the ones at CT are overpriced and crap.

Price of maker aside, what's the price of 10 cups of coffee using these packets?

I use my Faema multiple times every day. It is a great machine but costly. Hey, I am sure she is worth it!
Agreed. I have a Saeco Xelsis that I use daily to make americanos. No drip brew can compare.

Each single serving runs from 25 cents each on the low end (crappy no-name brand on sale) to 95 cents on the high end (say, Starbucks Verona from Costco - $50 for a box of 54 k-cups - not that I think Starbucks is high-end coffee).

Many middle-of-the-road ones around 50 cents each. Which is horribly expensive if you compare it to buying high-end whole bean coffee. I think someone calculated once that buying K-cups is like paying $51 per pound of coffee (!). All I can say is...you can buy some pretty fucking awesome coffee for $51 a pound...

On the other hand, K-cups are very convenient - 30 seconds and you get a cup of coffee, no cleanup like a french press (just toss the k-cup).

And if you get reasonably fresh K-cups, they're actually fairly palatable.

However, if you're the kind who is used to roasting your own, fresh-grinds in a $500 Mazzer burr grinder, and knows how to brew it to SCAA 'Gold Cup' standards...a K-cup is not gonna pass muster.

But a Keurig looks cool on a counter with the blue lights and everything :)

(when it doesn't have a priming problem...grrrr)

~$50 for a pound of coffee versus on average $20 for beans. Convenient yes, cheap no. If I reach into the back of my cupboard, I can still use my Melita drip I bought in college with the wooden collar. I wouldn't pay $500 for a grinder, but the $130 was well worth. I don't know from SCAA standards, but my coffee sure gets noticed.

I didn't know Melita drips had wooden collars - the only brewer I know with a wooden collar is a Chemex, which is an excellent brewing system. Perhaps that's what you have? Does it look like an Erlenmeyer flask? Do you have to 4-fold your filters?

Actually, even a porcelain Melita drip cone (hard to find these days), if used properly, can produce an excellent cup. I think people buy fancy machines because they get too caught up in the Macchina and usually don't pay enough attention to Macinazione, Miscela, and Mano. I know because I was a coffee geek once.

Anyways, a $500 mazzer grinder is serious overkill for drip coffee, it's really for precision espresso grinding. Still, it's cheaper than a $1200 Ditting :)

I'm sure your $130 grinder is doing a great job. A Baratza grinder of some type then? Solis Maestro? Great grinders for home use.
