What if you were an SP?

Today I was contemplating a thought: what if I was an SP?

Well, if I were an SP, I would most definetely be an indy and not share my the fruits of my labor with anyone else. I would closely guard my privacy but I would share parts of my soul with a select few that deserve to get to know me better. I would attend classes and explore all the wordly knowledge that life has to offer. I would take care of my body and my mind, realizing that they are intertwined and make up the very essence of my being.

Most of all, if I were an SP, I would put a smile on each and every caring person that crossed my path!:)

Well being an independent SP comes after some time wokring in the industry not many start off as being independent. There are exceptions, but i would say 95% start with an agency first. Most work for agencies first to build a client base and get a feel for the market. If you start off as an independent you will not be reviewed and many will be reluctant to book you, because no one will know you. Unless you are a knock out and your looks can speak for themselves. Becoming independent is almost like going out on your own, and although it is the ultimate goal of most SP's you need to put in the hours first.

Being independent is not that easy either. You have to cover all costs, websites, advertising, and a driver. Which would require you to have some capital to begin with, and let's face it if you are in this industry you probably don't have that much capital to begin with. And although you don't have to share your profits with anyone, alot of it goes into maintaining this independent status. Many girls start off with agencies for this particualr reason. You don't have to pay for advertising, websites maintainance, and a driver. The ony expense you pretty much much have is the cut the agency gets. But I know what you mean GG

See Deuce Bigalow. Why I could never be a male SP.

Besides, being a male SP, most of your clients will be gay guys.

That I could not do. And getting stuck with Bait & Switch is bad enough.

For guys, if you can't get it up, you just can't get it up.

Some of you are replying as if I was thinking of how it would be to be a male SP. I was thinking more along the lines of putting yourself in their shoes - i.e., what if you were a female SP....

I knew what you meant. Not for one second did I think of you being a male SP, but rather if you were a girl wanting to be a SP.

I love independent souls to buddy...:p

An SP has to endure insults, drunk and drugged out clients, unclean clients, abusive clients, non paying clients, no show clients etc.
Not a smart indie with some self-esteem. You can't do much about insulting email and no-shows, but the rest, you have a lot of control over. In my case, these kind of guys are usually not interested in my website, and it's designed as an efficient dickhead filter for precisely that reason. I'm sure it intimidates a few nice guys as well, but you can't have everything.

It means I don't have the highest possible income from this Biz but also explains how I've been in it for three years and looking forward to many more. Incidently, I've always been indie. I got no use for pimps of any kind.

Oh, except for the B.C. and Federal Student Loans people. And Revenue Canada. But no guys named Vinnie. ;)

Femme Fatale,

Great post. I know this thread sounds corny and idealistic to many of you but apart from making the guys think about how it feels to be an SP, my intentions were also for people like you to provide some advice to SPs who are thinking of becoming independent. Maybe I should have titled it "Screening out Dickheads 101: Advice for Independent SPs"

Now I know that it takes incredible discipline to be an independent SP and as you stated you might not have the highest possible income after screening out the scrap but at least you answer only to yourself. I figure that after building a clientele that you get to know and trust, you are in a better position to enjoy a safer and more stable cash flow.

Finally, we can all benefit by having to deal with less guys named Vinnie in the biz and as for Revenue Canada, they indiscriminately screw us all, especially those of us who fork over over 50% of our income on every pay slip!

It's been good to know ya
The best advice to independants is to keep a personality about those particular e mails. Just go na na na na boo boo if you do not want them to have your number and stick out your tongue at the monitor. Then if they mail you back and say hey, you still have not given me your number say keep trying baby keep trying. lol Trust me they do keep trying it is hilarious. As for the rest just give them the number if they are co-operative and nice.

But I agree it is nicer when you are in charge. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to see just anyone. Especially if you ever read some of these mailings.

ie... Hey baby, there is no number on your page and I wanna come over right now and ram my dick in ya. :D

ok ok I may like that but ummmmm.....

Wow, a real romantic proposal - how could you resist? I can only imagine the number of stupid emails you receive as an indy. I guess that is why most indies state that offensive emails will not be answered in hopes of minimizing this crap.

There should be a way to program your computer so it recognizes offensive emails and sends an automatic response: "Hey dickhead, go buy some vaseline and choke the chicken cause you ain't getting a piece of my ass!"
