The Recording and movie industry is coming down hard. They won against Kazzaa. All the p2p sites are either all disappearing or switching to pay format. Look for smaller, obscure sites for file swapping or go with torrents.

Power to the P2P.

Got this info .....through the Grapevine....... ;)

WinMx is working better than ever, each hour the files are getting bigger, this is a great win for P2P.
Can't recall any site picking up after an RIAA attack so rapidly.
Power to the P2P.

When WinMX decided to shut down, various ppls tried various ways to keep the decentralised network alive with split host files and with this beta version linked below. I still use v3.53 with PiePatch and most of us who specialise and trade are content for the time being. Other sites have been targeted for closure in the near future and we will keep monitoring the situation and act appropriately. A rumour is out that bit torrent is going to take a big hit during the next year, but since there are so many sites, the ISPs would be the fallguys. We'll wait and see!

... install latest version and then run the auto-patcher (PiePatch 2.6) then connect to the network.

If u r not connected to WinMX, start up winmx as u usually do … heck care whether it says connecting or not … just hit Chat and ok. U can access any room if u know the full room name : eg :

Vladd44 Help Channel_EFE32B411A22

Type that in the space and hit Join

U will be then be in the V44 room. There r people there to help u.

To get connected :

A) First change yr ports :

Changing ports to 16699/16257 with no proxy selected :

1) Hit Settings (button at top of winmx screen)
2) Internet Connection > Outgoing TCP Connections > Click : Don’t use a proxy server (connect directly)
3) Incoming TCP Connections : Click the top option : Listen on port 16699 for incoming TCP Connections (type in 16699)
4) Internet Connection > In/Out UDP Packets > Click the top option : Send and receive UDP datagrams on port 16257 (type in 16257)
5) Hit Close and restart winmx

B) Make sure yr router is also mapped to the same ports TCP : 16699 and UDP : 16257

C) Disable XP Firewall and if u have yr own Sygate firewall : to allow WinMX

To Disable XP Firewall :
Start > Right click My Network Places > Hit Properties > for the connection u see there (eg: LAN) right click on LAN (if it is LAN) and hit Properties > Select Advanced tab > at Windows Firewall … hit Settings > Click *Off* > hit OK.

D) Get the latest patch pie patch version 2.6 from here : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php

It self-installs when u click on Pie Automatic Installer.

After this, u shd be connected If all else fails, come look for us in V44 room or post here again

My screen name in V44 room is Kayleigh Good luck

Thanks for all the advice (it's a lot to digest).

I rarely download anymore -- I mostly went online to download all the music I'd already bought on various obsolete or poorly supported formats in the past -- and so I figure I already paid for the copyright on them, as well as my (limited) use of the media.

What's your advice on buying new music? I saw an album today I'd like to download -- Susan Tedeschi's new album. I have zero problems with paying for the copyright and for the convenience of downloading -- what I do have a problem with is some of the restrictions put on use of purchased downloaded files. I downloaded a couple of files off PureTracks some time ago and found the restrictions such as to make the downloads essentially useless to me (couldn't change the folder they were in, for example). If I buy something, I want to OWN it -- not just rent it for what might be an extremely limited time.

(I'm still stinging from the whole CD fiasco -- when CDs first came out, I had no reason to switch to them. Sure, the sound was better, but my ears weren't!! I was happy to stay with vinyl. Around that same time, though, I bought a number of vinyl albums only to find them to be extremely low quality. When this became a trend, grudgingly, my husband and I switched to CDs and rebought much of the music we already owned for that format. BUT not 15 years later, CDs are essentially obsolete and behind the times! Electronic music and mp3 players offer many, many more times the flexibility. So I guess I'm thinking, why should I pay through the nose again to an industry that I've dealt with in good faith all my life and that has consistently fucked me over?)

So I guess my next question is, if you purchase music online, is there anyway to get around the ridiculous proprietory stuff so you can use it when and where you see fit? (I'm not talking about sharing it here -- but rather so that you can change formats, put it in different folders, etc.)
