I'm sitting here a few drinks into the night, and am convinced that my doctor is right - alcohol is a depressant. Once again I have slowly realized that I have likely experienced most of the best "firsts" of my life - first kiss, first f**k, first time seeing unbelievable works of nature like Niagara Falls, first time staying up all night, etc.

This gets me down a bit - and I can't imagine it's just me that wishes they could be half their age but know what they know today.....

So tell us all, what things do you wish you could experience again for the first time??

I don't want to experience anything "again for the first time" - I'm having too much fun enjoying a bunch of other "firsts". Don't look back - look forward. Just a thought....

I find new firsts to try all the time.

First time skateboarding
First rabbit dinner
First time making a Microsoft movie
First time trying to get two ladies I have just met in a bar to go for a threesome

Keep trying new things, going new places (even if it is local). Just because we are older, noes not mean we can't experience life with the inquiry of a child. The whole thing is a matter of perspective.

The options are endless.

I hate f***ers like you two - always optimistic and positive! (Truth be told I envy you!). I know there must be other EMO's out there like me.

And I think in retrospect I came to this hobby trying to create some new firsts. And have I!!??!?!?!

It is a choice. We are goal seeking animals. We seek food, shelter, sex, and so on. Everything we do is an attmept to reach a goal whether it is reaching for a pencil, going for a piss etc. etc. Everything. You are doing it now.... what is your goal? Getting sympathy? Empathy? Answers? Having a drimk is goal seeking. Taste, efect etc.

Knowing how our minds work makes it easy as pie. You have an amazing goal seeking machine. Drive the fucking thing. Simple. It is YOUR choice. If you let the machine wander aimlessly, you will not be happy.

Those guys you hate? It's what they DO that makes them feel that way.

You are right, but I truly love this feeling of reminiscing. I don't want to live only hoping for what will be, but instead also embracing what was. And sometimes, that leads to things like this thread....

I really don't it's a question of wanting to "live only hoping for what will be". My motto is simple - everyday I wake up is a good day.
Don't think for a minute that I live in a situation that is easy, carefree, etc - far from it. And I also look back, mostly fondly, on the past. But I don't live there. I live here and now and I have people that depend on me. And waking up each day, at this point in my life, is much better than the alternative.

My friend, I have had a pretty rough life, albeit a pretty good one. I am certainly not happy all the time, it is impossible to be. At the same time though, I am not living in the past. Your memories are exactly what they are, and enjoy them for it... memories. The good thing is that new memories are being built all the time, the choice is up to you whether they will be good ones or not.

Remember, THESE ARE THE GOLDEN YEARS, RIGHT NOW, THE ONES YOU ARE LIVING AT THIS MOMENT!!! If you don't live life to the fullest though, these will be the rust years.

"What Gets You Melancholy?"

Crossing a Border Collie with a cantaloupe...... :) (any Spider Robinson fans here?)

Life begins at 40!

Have no idea what you're talking about kynorth... Been having the best time of my life! I'll be rounding the corner at 45 yrs old in a couple weeks.

This year's firsts (so far):
  • White water rafting
  • Cycling 80 in one day
  • Cycling 52 kms, kayaking 21, and walking 10 km all in same day!
  • 5 SOG in one "session" (a new record)
  • Giving wife 7 SOG in one "session" (a new record)
  • Went to a swinger club w/ my wife
  • Had wife do a "pole dance" for me
  • First time in my life I have lived in a house with 3 teenaged children!
  • First time I had 3 canoe trips in one week
  • First time "shooting rapids" on a tire tube
There's probably more... The trick I think is to keep trying new things. ;)

What gets me melancholy?

Looking at pictures of the gang back in the day (those were the best of times).
Music: It is known to be one of the biggest triggers of memory and when I hear songs I rocked out to back in the day......
Thinking of mistakes I made with women.

But like CG up there, new experiences are always something to look forward to. I've changed careers at least 6 times and I am just about to move to points north. I'm sick up and fed of this city....the taxation, the traffic, the sirens at all hours of the night, etc etc......
