What does "pooner" mean?

There are six posts on TERB that use the word "pooner".

I`ve found one glossary, anyway, with this word in it :

Pooner: A hobbyist who is immersed in the hobby culture. e.g. He may be very involved with the review boards and/or private exchange of information on providers and the hobby.

Usage on this board seems to be largely west-coast. Is this actually the case? Are there any connotations to the word besides what escorts.com lists? Does anyone know its etymology?

Maybe it is a spin off of "punter" a British/European term for client/"john"/"trick".

Apparently (hey, I don't make this up) the winning definition is:

'a person who obliviously excels in stupidity to their own detriment.'

a person who when ordering a bottle of shag lager will highlight the word shag in any number of 'amusing' quips. eg 'could i have a shag please barmaid' or 'if i have a shag will you have it with me'- What a Pooner!


I suspect this isn't a definition that fits the context cited. A more likely definition is that it's a replacement for a 'John' which could fit the second definition from urbandictionary... (edited to suit my needs)

"A person who sits at home (on a perfectly good evening for going out) and masturbates.

John ain't at the party tonight because he's a pooner."

Pooner = Whipped

Immersed is putting it lightly. I always thought pooner referred to someone who is obsessed with pussy. I mean REALY obsessed. Someone will to do anything to get more. Will spend out his entire pay cheque every week… and still not enough. Will bow down and kiss the ground that women walk on, begging, promising, pleading.

It is a PERBert term.....instead of saying "hobbyist", they say "pooner". It means someone who likes to "poon" (as in have sex) and all a derivative from "poon-tang".

Just stating from first-hand observation....

Pallydin is right the term is just another way of saying hobbyist, punter, etc and is derived from the term poon-tang. However it can't really be called a PERBert term as its usage predates PERB by a number of years.

But we need the urbandictionary definition. If "pooner" = "hobbyist": an extremely complimentary title, what do we call bozo at the bar?
