I am curious as to what supplements everyone takes (or doesn't). I recently went through a phase where I tried every (legal) supplement I could get my hands on. I found that most are useless or so weak that I just couldn't tell if they were working.

Here is my list:

- a multivitamin per day (my diet is not the best)
- a zinc tablet a day (recently figured out that I had a deficiency)
- vitamin D in the winter
- melatonin at bedtime as a sleep aid (it also had the happy side effect of stopping my migraines)
- coffee (caffeine is a supplement we don't realize that we are taking)

St. John's Wort seemed to work but it gave me the shits :( so I stopped that. Reducing coffee has a stronger effect than taking any anti-stress supplements I think.

It you feel the need and don't have any obvious medical shortfalls, not self diagnosed, a multivitamin is really all you need

I believe the current consensus on supplements is that they're mostly useless and in some cases, dangerous. (See Vitamin E)

You'd be better off improving your eating habits as the nutrients are more easily assimilated by your body.

To make this easier, of course, is to get a stick blender. Get used to the habit of making smoothies - they literally take only a minute to make and washing the stick blender is a snap. My favorite smoothie is milk, kefir, frozen blueberries, kiwi fruit and protein powder. Sometimes that's all I have for dinner.

Improving one's diet is even better than a multivitamin. Not only for the micro nutrients but also fiber - and flavour.

As a lactose-intolerant vegetarian there are 2 types of protein powder I like:
Vega (good but expensive; their chocolate flavour is quite tasty)
Progressive Nutrition Harmonzied Vegan Protein

and for performance supplement, I like to get an added kick on race days with Greens Plus Extra Energy powder.

Daily supplements

2000 mg of Ester C (you can never OD on Vitamin C)
500 mg of Milk Thistle (for liver)
120 mg of CoQ10 (for heart)

I'm also going to start taking Vitamin D on a recommendation from a co worker.

Unsalted cashews and walnuts google the health benefits. You will be amazed. On top of that simply drinking four or five tall glasses of water per day sometimes with fresh lemon squeezed in caffeine sucks the water right out of your body so for every cup of coffee consumed you need to replenish your system with two cups of water. Staying hydrated will make you feel great. Stop consuming any liquids like pop where the main ingredient is sugar. It's really more about a healthy lifestyle and diet rather than thinking that piling on the supplements will keep your body balanced and healthy

Perhaps. But it seems pointless to spend $$$ for the main benefit of pissing orange.

I also find it easier to eat healthy than to keep track of which supplements to take and when.

You have a specific requirements for a diet and chosen a vegan diet on top of that. This is totally different. For fibre, there's all sorts of naturals sources, so why need a special supplement. If you're just lazy try a bowl of Grape Nuts or Bran Buds and top with you favourite fruit, geesh. The OP didn't indicate such restriction or choices.

P.s Adderall is not Pro, its the opposite, its like frying your brain (aka prescribed meth)

The name moafinil rang a bell especially since you said no side effects, but was under study. You might want to check that out.

Anxiety, depression, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, infection, loss of appetite, loss of muscle strength, lung problems, nausea, nervousness, prickling or tingling feeling, runny nose, sore throat.

Modafinil Side Effects from the Physicians' Desk Reference®

Modafinil Side Effects from the Physicians' Desk Reference®", default", what side effects may occur? Why should Modafinil not be prescribed and overdose info.

Other brand names: Provigil

Why is this drug prescribed?

Modafinil is a stimulant drug used to prevent the excessive daytime sleepiness suffered by people with narcolepsy.

Most important fact about this drug

Modafinil, like other stimulants, has the potential for abuse. It can alter your mood, perception, thinking, and feelings, providing an artificial "lift" and potentially leading to a certain degree of dependence (although discontinuation of the drug does not produce physical withdrawal symptoms). Make a point of taking only the prescribed dose: Never increase the dose or take additional doses.

How should you take this medication?

Food does not reduce the effectiveness of this medication. However, it will delay the onset of action by approximately 1 hour.
If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as possible. If you don't remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

Storage instructions

Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Modafinil.

More common side effects may include:
Anxiety, depression, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, infection, loss of appetite, loss of muscle strength, lung problems, nausea, nervousness, prickling or tingling feeling, runny nose, sore throat

Less common side effects may include:
Abnormal ejaculation, amnesia, asthma, chest pain, chills, confusion, difficulty breathing, difficulty urinating, dry skin, face muscle spasms, fainting, fever, gum inflammation, herpes simplex, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, joint difficulties, low blood pressure, loss of muscle coordination, mood swings, mouth ulcer, neck pain, nosebleed, stiff neck, tense muscles, thirst, tremor, vision problems, vomiting

Why should this drug not be prescribed?

If Modafinil gives you an allergic reaction, you'll need to avoid it.

Special warnings about this medication

If you have high blood pressure, liver disease, or a history of psychosis or drug abuse, use Modafinil with caution. Be sure your doctor knows your medical history before you begin this medication.

Modafinil should be avoided by people with certain types of heart disease such as mitral valve prolapse. If you've ever had a heart problem, be sure to check with the doctor before using this drug.

Modafinil may impair your judgment, thinking, or motor skills. You should not drive a car or operate hazardous machinery until you know how this medication affects you.

Oral and implantable contraceptives are less effective while you are taking Modafinil. You should use an additional method of contraception while you are taking Modafinil and for one month after discontinuing this medication.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

The effect of combining Modafinil with alcohol has not been studied. It's considered wise to avoid alcohol while taking the drug.

If Modafinil is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Modafinil with any of the following:

Antidepressants such as Effexor, Elavil, Pamelor, Paxil, Prozac, and:

Tofranil
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Clomipramine (Anafranil)
Cyclosporine (Sandimmune)
Diazepam (Valium)

There are many things that are great for you that you may never get from your food for example tumeric.

i have an array of supplements from multivitamins to joint formulas, greens powders and herbal stuff.

I know the joint supplement works as stopped my wrist pain I had for months.

I bought a cheap men's vitamin in China town with a whole list of supposed aphrodisiacs like horny goat weed, oatstraw and catuaba.

It does nothing different compared to when I don't use it.

This article sheds some light on why some supplements may not do as promised.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/05/science/herbal-supplements-are-often-not-what-they-seem.html?_r=0

We have all heard about lack of standardization and potency among supplements but this article outlines something even more ridiculous.

There may not be any of the product described on the bottle in the actual supplement.

Lobsters and Chivas Regal, not necessarily together or in that order. Everything in moderation!
