Boy oh boy, I knew this kind of post would surface some day. Doesn't necessarily apply to CL only, could be with anyone, anywhere.

http://ottawa.en.craigslist.ca/cas/1278758841.html

I just met a woman from offline- she completely lied about her looks weight. She seemed nice enough but I wasn't interested so I left after about 15 minutes.

I went back to my car and found some of my car electronics were STOLEN out of the vehicle parked in her driveway. I called her house, knocked on the door, honked the horn outside but nobody answered.

So I left a message on her phone saying I wanted my property back (it was obvious that someone close to her had taken it) and that I was going to call the cops if I didn't get it back- no answer. Drove down the road and saw a police car so I pulled up and explained the situation. I talked to a couple of really nice police officers who checked out my car for damage and started writing up a report. I called the house again and left a message saying I was just now speaking with 2 police officers and that we would come by the house if my property wasn't returned. Well what do you know I got a call back from the house saying that she had "found" my electronics sitting in the grass in front of her house, and that it must have been an accident that it fell out of the car or something- this is complete BS I looked around when I discovered it missing and nothing was there.

I told her as long as I got my property back that I would not follow up with charges.... I don't need the hassles or the publicity of the fact that I use craigslist and ultimately I need discretion for my job so it was better to not have any record of the incident like a police report with my name on it.

I've met some cool people on craigslist and had a lot of fun but this should be a reminder to everyone that you need to watch your back when meeting unknowns through craigslist- there are many people who are just using this service to rip people off.

I got lucky thanks to the help of two really cool cops but it easily could have ended with me never seeing my property again.

Watch your backs folks and BEWARE of scams, frauds and setups because they are certainly out there.

I absolutely NEVER park nearby. I always park a few blocks away and walk to the location. When I leave, I never walk straight to my car either. I take a circuitous route. Follow the advice of Andy Grove: "only the paranoid survive"

Me too. Park a short distance away or cab it. Am paranoid about security and confidentiality as well.

A lot to be learned from this post and 10 points to Telywho for using the word circuitous in a sentence!

When ever visiting a new location take the time to review your surroundings, not parking directly at the location is good practice as many have expressed.
If you feel uncomfortable trust your instincts, and leave, is any tail real worth the risks ? It's not really a matter of being paranoid, it's just being smart, safe and aware.

It should be noted reminded that this was not an established provider but a "casual" encounter ad where this scheme took place, don't want to give the ladies a bad name. I've contacted the cl poster to provide more details so that no one else falls for this stunt.
