In producing its own tablet style pc called Surface, Microsoft
is entering a market dominated by Apple. Six out of
every 10 tablets shipped are iPads, according to research firm
IHS iSuppli.

Here are the top five manufacturers of tablets last year:

Apple Inc., maker of the iPad, 62% share.

Samsung Electronics Co., maker of Galaxy line, 9%.

Amazon.com Inc., maker of Kindle Fire, 6%.

Barnes & Noble, maker of Nook products, 5%.

AsusTek Computer Inc., maker of Transformer line, 3%.

  • Google to introduce low‑priced Android tablet in “coming weeks”

PS

  • Apple initiates employee hardware discount program

As promised early this year, Apple began its new Employee Purchase Plan+, offering an extra $500 discount on eligible Macs and $250 off the iPad to its employees.

  • Rumor: First Microsoft Surface tablet units to be Wi-Fi only,
just a ploy to sell Windows 8, says Acer founder.

  • Oil falls below $79 US

Crude was selling for as much as $106 in early April. Prices have been falling
as the world economy slows down. America isn't creating as many jobs as hoped,
Europe is facing another recession, and manufacturing activity in China
appears to have slowed. The drop in oil prices has made gasoline cheaper.
But don't worry, comes and goes. Everything will be fine eventually.
Confidence is powerful and sexy indeed.

P.S.

  • Dad's brains mean more to his son's success than his money: Study

Sons of fathers with high incomes tend to end up with higher than average incomes themselves, but new research shows that it's not just dad's money that helps a son on his way. According to a recent study, human capital endowments passed from father to son -- perhaps in the form of smarts, advice, work ethic, or some other intangible -- could be more important to a son's success than the size of dad's paycheck.

  • Cancer vaccine breakthrough using 'cold' virus

Scientists claim to have overcome a major hurdle in their work on finding a way to wipe out cancer with viruses.
Scientists suggest the reovirus, which usually causes mild colds or stomach upsets, has the power to shrink tumours.

They have created the viral vaccine that can be injected into the bloodstream, "hitching a ride" on blood cells and avoiding the immune system.
The reovirus treatment acts both like chemotherapy and a vaccine. It kills tumour cells while at the same time causing an anti – cancer immune response, which is showing real promise in patient trials with a simple injection into the bloodstream.

reovirus specifically targets cancer cells and leaves normal cells alone, which we hope should mean fewer side effects for patients.''
Scientists had feared that immune system antibodies in the blood would mop up the viral particles, preventing them from reaching their target.

The discovery could pave the way to viral therapies one day becoming a standard form of cancer treatment.

(I was told that more cold you got, less chance to get malignant disease, maybe it is true? I hope so, I really hope so, which can save many beings.)

PS.

  • INFLATION DIPS TO LOWEST LEVEL IN 2 YEARS

Canada’s inflation rate tumbled to its lowest level in almost two years
last month, falling to 1.2% as Canadians paid less for gasoline, video
equipment and some types of clothing, while price gains in many other
consumer goods moderated.

The combination of softening prices, a weakening global economic
outlook and Ottawa’s surprising clampdown on home mortgage
rules likely takes away any pressure for Bank of Canada to start
raising interest any time soon.

May’s inflation plunge was mostly attributable to: Gasoline prices, the first outright decline in 23 months;
Gas prices also dropped on a monthly basis, dipping 3.5% from April; Women’s clothing slipped 3.2% from
last May; Fresh vegetables cost 7.1% less; Video equipment plunged 13.3%; Price of natural gas fell 16.6%.

Price increases in May included food, up 2.5%; electricity, 5.4%
higher; meat, up 6.1%; homeowner replacement costs, up 2.4%, and
automobiles, which cost 1.7% more than last year.

Newfoundland and Labrador continued to post the highest inflation in the
country at 2.5, while Alberta remained the lowest at 0.4 %.

  • FINAL BEAM HOISTED ATOP 4 WORLD TRADE CENTER

The steel construction of 4 World Trade Center is drawing to a close.
Construction workers are scheduled to gather at the site to see some
workers sign the building’s final steel beam before it’s lifted 300 metres
by a crane and placed on top of the building.

The tower is scheduled to open late next year. It is expected
to be the first tower completed on the 16-acre World Trade
Center site since the Sept. 11 attacks.

  • Google's Simulated Human Brain Has Trained Itself to Recognize Cats on YouTube

As intelligent as computers continue to get, it's still a lot of work for them to perform tasks
many humans do on a regular basis--like, say, enjoying cat videos on YouTube. In an attempt
to bridge that gap, scientists from Google's X laboratory created a simulated human brain by
putting 16,000 computer processors together and having them browse around the Internet,
learning facts about the world as they went. And the simulated human brain successfully found
YouTube's cats.

Researchers say the project is helping to boost the theory that machines do better at learning
the more information they're fed. It will be interesting to see what applications this tech could
have in a broader environment.

  • Exxon CEO says low U.S. natgas prices not sustainable
U.S. natural gas prices are too low to allow the energy industry to cover
the cost of finding and producing new supplies, the head of top producer
Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) said on Wednesday.

"The cost of supply is not $2.50. We are all losing our shirts today".

Tillerson also said the recent decline in oil prices appeared to be linked to
rising crude oil inventories, economic worries in Europe and a slowdown in China's
growth, as well as a more stabile political situation in the Middle East.

"I don't know how far (oil prices) can go. There's room for it to go lower. There's also
room for it to come back up in the future," he told reporters.

  • Google goes up against Amazon, Apple with Nexus tablet

$199(USD) "Nexus 7" tablet, built by and co-branded with Taiwan's Asus, run by
4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Android operating system delivers faster performance
and new features such as "voice search."

Google said it will offer buyers of the Nexus 7 a $25 credit to spend at the Google Play
store and it showed off several media-centric capabilities, such as a new magazine reading app.

$299(USD) Nexus Q Media Streamer, The Nexus Q will allow users to wirelessly stream music, video,
and YouTube content to their home entertainment systems. Also serving as an amplifier, the Nexus Q
can be connected directly to speaker systems such as Google's new $399(USD) Triad speakers.

(Google's free Android software is the No. 1 operating system for smartphones, with about 1 million Android devices getting activated every day

Meanwhile, Apple has increasingly moved to reduce its dependency on Google services on its devices. Earlier this month it unveiled its own mapping software, which will replace Google maps as the default mapping service in the next version of its mobile operating system.

And Amazon's Kindle Fire, while based on Google's open-source Android software, features a customized interface that does not use many Google services

PS.

YES, WE ARE

PATRIOTIC: POLL

The Ipsos-Reid online survey of 1,100 people – suggest the Canadian
sense of national pride is becoming an in-your-face swagger.

The survey suggests that when it comes to the maple leaf, the country’s most potent
national symbol, Canadians consider it their overwhelming choice for a national symbol – and
they like seeing it everywhere, even on their underwear.
