Anyone heard of the Russian dude G. I. Gurdjieff, who lived until the mid 20th century. In brief these are his ideas:

- Most humans live their entire lives in a state of sleep. We act like machines, reacting to our environment, emotions, upbringing, our bodies and a million distractions of the modern world. Thus we are are not free willed, we only respond to stuff.

- Humans are capable of a higher state of existence. Simply by recognising our state of sleep, we can discover our "real I" (you can say soul).

- Through a disciplined practice of "self remembering" we can permanently wake up. He allegedly learned techniques to do this from sects who have passed this knowledge by word of mouth for thousands of years.

He might have been a scam artist, but a lot of this makes sense. Just recognising my state of sleep was a revelation.
