It was more universal across the nation / nations.
However part of the reason was it was one of the first so all the fake shit was less common and more obvious.
And lastly nostalgia.
Backpage was easier to post on as a provider, and I found it easier to see the variety...
But leolist offers verification (even if its not 100%) & you can search the ads
Both are / were great but as it is common scammers come in & ruin everything.
I personally prefer tryst, but a lot of people don't like them
The biggest thing I think works is twitter

I don't ever remember going and seeing a girl from backpack and it wasn't the girl in the ad. Maybe old pics or photoshoped but was still them. Now it's just a fucking joke. It's must be like 75% fake now.
Fakes on BP were much easier to spot. More agencies posting then so they tend to post real pics and then you had Cowboy Kenny to out them.

Backpage had fewer scammers, it appeared that all the ladies were legit. Even Duttslist was good. No deposit request ads and yes, Cowboy Kenny and people on other boards were there to speak out about the scammers, but there weren't many.
As a provider ; nothing will ever compare to backpage.
It was easy to post on , affordable , easy to navigate and hands down just the best for everyone.
Leolist can be a joke sometimes. They tell girls how they should pose in order to get verified and if they dont like your pictures/ poses they will not approve them .They also increase their rates dramatically and it is in Euros which makes it more expensive.

I had many memorable encounters off BP, particularly from ladies who only do this on the side and only posted every now and again whenever they needed help with rent and what have you.
There have been many websites trying to replace them since their demise, including LL, but IMO nothing has come close.

There used to be Escorts-Canada.com before BackPage. Often that would be a good source when it was busy with ads. It may have even been affiliated with TERB, or the Rosy Board at one point, I'm guessing though. Before that, there was the Yellow Pages 
They're all better than the Ottawa Sun classified section, which is all we used to have to work with.
I really dislike leolist. They charge in euros, a cad 20 is 12 euro a cad 30 is 18, and so. It's such a rip. To post a reg bump in a two pack is 8 or 9 euros. I'm enclosing my payment history so you guys can see just how much money is spent posting on that website. They raised their prices recently so even add ons like inserting emojis in the ad is more. Those decorative ads with champagne classes or flowers in the background is now $6 for only 3 hrs of advertising time. It's very expensive to post on Leo now.

I don't know if it was the time (at which I started hobbying, early 2017) but Backpage featured a greater number and variety of 'local' ladies who were legitimate providers, especially if one took the time to do a bit or research on Terb. Yes, there were still some scammers (mostly bait & switch), many from out of town, but these seemed fewer and were easier to identify.

Leolist often is a turn off. Maybe back then, things were different. Great time on BackPage, but that was an era of CowboyKenny level fun and frolic. Now, its just a machine of money extraction, and lack of thrill. The effort from LeoList to ensure posts are authentic just creates better scammers. Just check out all the asian ads. They all pass the Leolist's strategy.
Tryst is not new, at least since 2017. It's been dead most of it. The ads are legit but not a lot. That's where I discovered some great ones but, it's been pretty quiet since then and it's the same ads for ever.
