Hello my tech savvy friends!

I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice about VPN services? I've gotten a few sternly worded letters from Rogers about my downloading activity, so I thought I'd look into VPN's. Does anyone use them and have any recommendations? I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so the easier the better please. Thanks

A VPN only lets you get around region locking of content i.e. downloading or streaming content from non-Canadian sites likes US NetFlix, HBO Go, Hulu, Pandora, etc. Region locking is when you visit a non-Canadian website and you get the "friendly" message that your geographic region is not supported. Even with a VPN, you'd still be downloading data through Rogers so you'd still get a nasty letter from them. Only solution is to switch ISP's or get a higher download limit. TekSavvy is a good ISP IMO.

Yes, VPN can be used to hide your IP address from the computer at the other end, but you're still connecting through Rogers and they know who you are and the sites you're visiting.
Was the letter about bandwidth/amount you're downloading, or something else?

What kind of letters are you getting? I have unlimited internet with Rogers, download a shit ton of stuff and have never gotten a single letter.

This is not true. A VPN is an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the VPN server. All Rogers will see is that you are making an encrypted connection to that server no matter where you go. If you are really paranoid you want to go with a VPN provider that doesn't do any logging. This is in the remote case that the police serve the VPN provider with a warrant asking them for a list of sites you've visited. Some VPN providers such as ExpressVPN do logging but only connection IP and duration of connection but no logging of actual sites visited.

To select a VPN provider you can investigate several options from here - https://www.bestvpn.com/top-10-vpn-providers/

Sorry for a little off topic here --- is VPN the only way to watch US Netflix, or are there other options?

You'll get a letter from rogers if you're downloading movies, games etc. Because example the game company saw you downloading a torrent on the internet called Rogers and complained so Rogers sends you a letter. But a vpn like Outforun said are id encryped so they can't see what you're downloading .
I don't know if I would go with Tedchsavy as the movie industry is trying to get them to release the name of downloaders.
Anyone know of a good free VPN?

Never seen a free VPN but suggest you look into BitTorrent if you seek anonymity. They will take you through the process.

The bittorrent program doesn't provide anonymity, doesn't say so on their page. There are several free VPN.

Maybe it is because I don't use Bittorrent for downloading, but I have never had an issue with Rogers or letters or anything. I don't get how gaming companies see you downloading their stuff. Unless they are putting it up there and then looking at the IPs. I go to say extratorrent and not as a member, and simply download. Where is the movie or gaming company finding out my IP to then track me to Rgoers, to then have them send me a letter? And if so, how are the tracing my IP back to me from a TOR browser?

It doesn't matter what torrent browser you're using , they can see the torrents and the transmission of info on the internet. Tor browser is notorious not good for torrents, they say it on they're web site. VPN is the way to go.

Do a search here is a random page. http://lifehacker.com/5870042/what-does-my-internet-provider-see-when-im-downloading-torrents

Sorry for not explaining this earlier. I had received a few e-mails that Rogers had forwarded from the film companies about illegal downloading of certain movies. It seems they traced my IP address when downloading them. I use BitTorrent, so I thought using a VPN would hide the IP address.

US Netflix isn't as big a deal as it was when Netflix first launched. They still have more stuff, especially TV shows, but it isn't the huge gap it was the first year Netflix was in Canada when we got almost nothing.

There is actually stuff on Canadian Netflix that you cannot get in the US now as well, recent headline movies Netflix was unable to sign in the US because a competitor got exclusive, but we get it on Canadian Netflix.

A good VPN will definitely keep you anonymous. Rogers won't know even though you still use their network. I can explain it if anyone wants to know how.

I recommend Private Internet Access. $40/year, good software, decent speed and reliability, no logging. The free ones make money somehow. Usually by logging what you do and selling your info. Maybe they sell it anonymously, maybe they don't. I don't risk it.

Stop downloading from public tracker sites like piratebay and start using private sites. Most private sites are invite only so you may have to get a friend or co-worker to send you an invite. Rodgers will still know you are downloading but the film companies will not.
When torrents are uploaded to public sites companies will download the files themselves and be able to see any IP address sharing that file. They search the various IPs and send out letters.
The lesson here. STOP USING PIRATEBAY!!

Edit to add:
I have been a heavy downloader for years (no VPN or seedbox) and have never been warned of anything. If you are truly worried about the legalities of the content you download get a VPN but if not don't waste your money. Just find a private tracker.
