This was posted today on Engadget. SP1 would sure be nice especially if it improves peripheral compatibility.

"It's already got its own toilet paper in Japan, but the rest of us are still patiently waiting for Vista SP1 to officially hit -- but maybe not for much longer: DailyTech is reporting that SP1 will be available for download starting tomorrow, with boxed copies to follow on store shelves Wednesday. While Microsoft's PR team wouldn't confirm anything other than "on track for mid-March" to The Register, it seems the company has been a little more forthcoming with its pals at Amazon, which is also listing March 18th as the release date for SP1. That's some fishy fish, but there's only one way to find out for reals -- nap time, here we come."

I've been using SP1 for a few weeks (got it as a select customer), and I've noticed an improvement in overall performance. Not too sure about peripherals, but I'll say Vista is better performance was after SP1. Still room for improvement.. but I've noticed memory usage is lower overall, while performance is smoother.

That's good the hear because the beta version of Vista SP1 has been out for awhile and most reviewers said it slowed down their PCs which scared people from trying it. Hope they solved that issue.

Microsoft has released the long-awaited first Windows Vista Service Pack, a wrap-up of incremental updates that apparently cripples certain vendors' software.

SP1 tackles reliability and performance, adds support for new hardware and wraps in earlier updates for compatibility with third party software. Microsoft claims more than 2,000 applications are now "certified for" or "work with" Windows Vista.

The only problem? A number of security products won't start up or run on updated desktops thanks to "compatibility problems". Among those affected are BitDefender AV or Internet Security, Fujitsu Shock Sensor and Zone Alarm Security Suite. Meanwhile, other products will experience "loss of functionality" once you've installed SP1, Microsoft said.

Microsoft has also introduced a number of security changes to Windows Vista, including updates to BitLocker drive encryption. And SP1 is "aligned" with Windows Server 2008, the two operating systems sharing common files in Internet Information Services and concurrent user support.

The first Windows Vista SP has long been seen by some analysts, at least, as the catalyst for broad uptake of the operating system among businesses.

I installed SP1 today. Right before the install I ran ErrorKiller, a registry cleaner, and there were no problems. After the install of SP1 I ran it again and found 161 registry entries that were no longer needed.

It won't install on my PC, even if I run vanilla Home premium. I get the dreaded error 80073712 at 13 % downloaded.

32 bit Vista will only recognize 3 gigs of ram. If you wanted to use more than 3 gigs of ram you had to get 64 bit Vista.
Maybe SP1 opened up 32 bit Vista so it can use more than 3 gigs of ram.

Newsbreak: I found an update KB936330 that fixed the problem. After that
sp1 installed successfully.

From MS themselves........ what I get from it is that it will report the amount installed, not the amount that can be used by the OS .... except in cases it doesn't *lol* Read yourself :

With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4GB in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.

Just installed SP1.
Took about an hour, everything seemed to go smoothly.
Checked, control panel > system and it nows shows 2.00 GB ram memory while before it only showed 1.918 GB.
It also shows SP1.

Also picked up 19 GB of free space! I had noticed HDD free space was disappearing faster than normal and I wasn't downloading anything to disc, mainly just surfing the web. It must have cleared out some of the crap that windows accumulates from just running Vista the last couple weeks. This concerned me because XP never accumulated that much crap and Ubuntu doesn't appear to accumulate anything.

Haven't tested out performance on the www, so can't say if it's running any better as yet.



PS: Gave it a little spin in the web and it does seem a bit quicker.....so far.

This all seems rather encouraging. I hope to install SP1 this weekend.

Anyone notice any issue with their anti-virus or firewall software? I read that some of the advanced security features in SP1 may cause some problems for programs like Zone Alarm, Norton etc.

Not a problem but Trend Micro did flag the first email I sent as if it had never seen Windows Mail before.

Did microsoft remove sp1?

I installed SP1 on my desktop Vista Home Premium yesterday. Today, I wanted to install it on my laptop, and it is not there?

I don't quite understand. On my desktop, windows update installed SP1
automatically yesterday.

Here is the statement from microsoft that jwmorris kindly referred me to:


Today, you can now download Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update. For those of you eager to receive the benefits of Windows Vista SP1, you can now do so. We've seen quite a bit of questions in our comments so we want to communicate as much as possible surrounding Windows Vista SP1 and today's release to Windows Update as we can.
For those of you happy to wait, sit tight because SP1 will start downloading to PCs automatically beginning in mid-April (remember, this happens only if you have your Windows Update configured to automatically download updates and SP1 will automatically download but not automatically install). But if you want to get the benefit of a year's worth of improvements right now, go check Windows Update today (hit the Start Menu, All Programs, and select Windows Update).

Went to: Start > Programs > Windows Update, then selected SP1 and let MS do the rest. Went through smoothly and took about an hour.

Laptop is running faster now.

The only problem is Opera, my fav browser, is still crashing a lot with Vista!
Anyone else having this problem?
May have to switch to FF when using Vista.

That is what I did on my desktop. On my laptop, SP1 does not show up in
windows update.

That's strange.
You could try giving MS a phone call and ask them about it.
