There are no production mac computers that meet the requirements for the Rift or htc vive
Even a ($6000. US) mac pro with dual Amd graphics cards can not run those VR headsets

if you have an iphone you can use google cardboard for a light taste of what you're missing ;)
Apple now sell the Mattel Viewmaster in their stores. it's based on Google Cardboard specs

too early to call apple a loser for missing out on the VR train. I mean 4 years ago you could have said the same thing about apple missing out the 3d monitor craze.

was there a 3D monitor craze? i must have missed that one. VR is being hyped as being HUGE and will initially be driven by "gamers" and early adopters. The gaming segment is the train that Apple really missed, they have never taken gaming serious and that is why they are not ready. Both Oculus and Htc are currently back ordered for months now. so in that time i expect Apple will update it's computer line with high end graphics options for later this year or next.

I expect a lot of mac users seriously wanting in on the early VR craze will buy a Windows pc or go the Sony Playstation VR route

As if Apple cares about Oculus Rift. They're already developing their own Apple VR.
they are rumored to be developing their own VR. Apple has not commented on their plans other than Tim Cook saying he doesn't believe VR will simply be a niche market.
In typical Apple fashion they will let everyone else spend large amounts of cash on R&D and marketing, Apple will then take the best of what each has to offer and call it their own.

If outside of gaming; movies, videos, concerts, etc..., there is a compelling case for VR then Apple will become a major player in the VR market, I would venture to say that Apple will be the dominant player. If VR is just limited to games then Apple will not touch it with a 10ft pole.

As large as the backorders are for VR headsets, Apple is used to products selling in the multi millions bringing in multi billions of dollars. You could take all the pre order money for rift and vive, show Apple the amount and Apple would say they more more money than that from a week of iphone sales.

I would never own a Mac anyway, so lucky me.

Virtual reality is coming, it's just a matter of time. They may not get it right this time around, but eventually they will. It has so many applications that they're never going to stop trying.

Google Quicktime™ VR. It's been around for at least a decade; just like 3D has been around since the 1800's. Until the 'new way' of showing us recorded reality is as easy to use as looking out a window, or so useful we'll put up with the trouble, it'll be a niche product.
