You know I listened to all the pros & cons of the Iraqi war from the anti-American and frequently liberal left to the conservative rhetoric of Pat Buchanan or the born-again zealotry of the American president. I read the majority of the war postings on this board and really had nothing to add. But I have never, . . . never been so upset by the desecration of the Canadian WWII cemetery in Etaples, France.
There may be protests, the burning of flags and the hurling of insults. Forget the opposition of the French at the U.N Security Council. Forgive their less than honourable defense of the homeland in 1940. I find it incredibly hard not to be furious about the comments on the cenotaph.
"The graffiti . . . included anti-American slogans.
One read: "Dig up your rubbish. It's fouling our soil."
Another proclaimed support for Saddam Hussein with the words: "Saddam will win and spill your blood."
The cemetery contains the graves of 11,000 soldiers, most of them British, but there are 1,148 Canadians buried there as well. There are no U.S. graves in the cemetery."
Maybe we should remove the remains of our soldiers from a country so bereft of dignity and honour that even the simplest fool would have the brute ignorance to leave so vile a message.
I am even beginning to have a distaste for the French in Quebec. Where else in this country would they openly boo the American National anthem at the Molson Centre or treat a pee wee hockey team from Massachusetts like an invading enemy? Why has every French-Canadian Prime Minister been a limp-dick when it came to kicking someone's ass but they are ready to lick it whenever a third-world, banana republic dictator beckons? Would there have been a conscription crisis if the descendants of the French colonies had the will to aid the spineless mother nation.
Ah . . . this is beginning to read like a piece of Leninist propaganda. I will say this, if they ever catch the punks who sprayed a swastika on the cemetery monuments, I want 'em to turn the bastards over to me for two minutes! Just the time it would take to get my 80 year old grandpa out of the legion, a man that once killed men with his bare hands so these pricks could desecrate his buddies graves. FTF*FTF
