Vin Scully wraps up 67 years of broadcast excellence. To underscore how long that is, Jackie Robinson was the NL MVP the previous year - after management told him he no longer had to be a diplomat. Commercial flight was just beginning to take off. Farley Mowatt made his first trip to the Canadian North...and the Leafs were the powerhouse of the NHL.

Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax were still teenagers. He's broadcast games throughout the Dodgers transition, from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, The LA Coliseum when they moved west to Chavez Ravine. Chris Carter created the character Scully of The X -Files in deference to him. Most of all, he called the 1993 World Series for American broadcast, then actively lobbied to have Tom Cheek inducted into the Baseball HOF.

He's an irreplaceable North American treasure, it's the end of an era.

Didn't Mr. Scully called the longest came in MLB history, you know, God verse Noah, the 40 days and 40 night game lol. Either that one or Branch Rickys first came as a Dodger manager

Branch Rickey was already GM of the Dodgers when Scully started broadcasting, 1950 was his last year as GM. I didn't know that Rickey was the GM of the St Louis Cardinals for 23 years before taking on the role with the Dodgers. His career as a baseball player floundered, after getting cut by the New York Highlanders (later to become the Yankees) he went to college and earned a Bachelor of Law. He is best remembered for signing Jackie Robinson, but as the GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 50's he also signed Roberto Clemente. One of the first player's he signed, George Sisler, held the single season hitting record for 81 years before Ichiro broke it in 2004.

IMHO Harrison Ford's portrayal of Rickey in 42, is possibly his best work as an actor.

I remember listening to Vin back in the 80's when NBC used to have the game of the week. I believe that the game was preceded by "This Week in Baseball", which was a great weekly recap show long before the media saturation we have today.

Imagine doing the same job for almost 70 years...
