Your best bet is to go private sale on ebay, craislist, etc. This kind of equipment moves pretty fast due the nature of their function. Going to camera shops and pawn shops usually end up with paying more.

You could also consider approaching a photographer that has exsisting gear, and offer to buy new ones for them in exchange for the old ones and then they pay you the difference. I have heard of that before. Good luck...

The first thing to do is to find out exactly what you need/want. Continuous lighting for video is not as expensive as strobes.

Another rental place is Headshots:

http://www.headshotsrentals.com/

Used to be cheaper than Vistek but it was recently bought by Henrys and I am not sure that it is still the case.

The advantage to renting is that you don't have to store it between shoots. If you plan to do this on an ongoing basis, it's probably better to buy.

There are also camera fairs for used equipment. Lighting is frequently available. There is one on Jan. 27 at the soccer crentre in Thornhill. looking for this stuff used can be time consuming and may not be worth it.

But the first thing to find out is what you want.

I think its a softbox I need do they come with a lightbulb already inside them?
Softboxes come in all sizes and shapes. (Just google "softbox"). You need the light source, the stand and most likely more than one light. Get someone to advise you on what you need after you explain to them what you want to do.

You also need to state what it is to be used for. A short video for Youtube can be done with very basic equipment. If it is to be broadcast or recorded on a DVD, you will need more sophisticated equipment.

Presumably you will use a camera person. He or she should be able to tell you what is required.

Another route might be to rent a studio that is already equipped. It's much cheaper than a hotel.

Good luck!
