GIVE one documented case of the harms caused by GMO. crackpot internet websites do not count
If you can sit down long enough, enjoy, but as history has shown about you, I doubt you will.

If you don't believe these scientists, would you believe the FDA?

No one would argue for GMO except the billions of people on earth who would otherwise have to die of starvation. my read is that the population goes up according to food supply. the rich can afford organic. the rest...well, sorry.

What GMO is creating in a giant monoculture and it takes one unforeseen blight to wipe out a single species crop. What you also get is a soil structure that can only grow that one crop as it needs the help of the fertilizers. check out the result os use Round Up Ready crops and BT cotton in India. There was a massive crop lost due to a rot that hit and there was little that could be door as the farmer had sunk every penny into the seed. India is strting to rethink their commitment to GMO, but it will take years.

^ On the other hand, GMO rice has gone amazing things for the health of the those dependent upon the crop in parts of Asia and Africa.

There is an increase in yield, but if, as in India, half the crop rots in the field or warehouses because they don't have infrastructure to get it to the markets, it's wasted.

Gee, the same thing happened in Ireland a couple of hundred years ago.

Basically a monoculture crop farming system is a problem waiting to happen. The Irish never saw to coming and it came from the old colonies
Well monoculture crops compared to non-existent crops seems a pretty easy decision, except for those who can afford whatever they want.

A lot of the non exiting situations are a result of bad agricultural practise over decades. California is a tragedy waiting to happen.

And the bad practices have little to do with GMO.

It's possible that some GMO's might prove dangerous but we know they save millions of lives by providing food for the needy.

A large part of this particular GMO debate is based on two issues:

1. The public's right to know what large biotech companies are doing in their communities, vis a vis testing & experimentation, along with public participation in the process to determine what is acceptable in the places they were born, raised and live in. Basically, they don't want their communities to be living labs for large biotech firms that care little about Hawaii and give nothing back to them.

2. The desire for Hawaiians to maintain their cultural and natural heritage. The concern is that agro-chemical monoculture will rob the Island(s) of its biodiversity, and therefore its cultural history of eco-friendly, sustainable and diversified farming of indigenous species, combined with the carefully managed farming of [mostly European] introduced species. Hawaiians are fiercely proud people who are fighting hard to maintain and regain their heritage; biotech firms that move in and try to impose their will and values are looked at as a new wave of unwelcome colonialists.

The debate about GMO crops in general is far more wide-ranging and complicated with myriad pros and cons, depending on which side of the debate one is on.

but the bad practise opens the doors for the short term solution of GMO crops. No one has long term studies on the affect on human but lab studies show serious physiological affects on lower animals.
