What do I need? How much does it cost?

I have a moderately sized VHS collection that I'd like to get rid of both to save space and preserve video quality.

I have a PC readily accessible.

There's are some Home Hardware that do VHS to DVD & VCD conversions. (Don't quote me on it, but I remember reading that it was somewhere between 5-15 dollars for the process....) I am not sure about the cost, but I think that it would probably be more cost efficient than purchasing a unit that you will use once.

I would probably suggest that you go to a flea market or pacific mall, because you will probably get the same service at a cheaper price.

Happy Shopping!

More like I can't be bothered to do it all at once and I'd rather have the luxury of doing it one VHS tape at a time. And there's no way I'm going to (over)pay someone to make copies for me.

But I bought a converter this morning so problem solved.

Converter as in...

VHS/DVD unit or different hardware? Would you mind sharing the make/model as I too am looking to do the same? Also what did it set you back?

Thanks

I use a JVC HR-S5912U S-Video VCR, an ATI TV Wonder Pro video capture card, and a SoundBlaster Live audio capture card. If you want to remove any bits of program from the VHS, you'll also need some sort of .vob editing software. The VCR is about $240, and it cost about $250 combined for the [hardware] capture cards, including installation, so probably $100 a piece for the cards.

^^^ This is what I bought. I wanted the +R capability that a lot of DVD players don't have.
OK, so you have the DVD recorder. I'm assuming you also have a VHS player since you have tapes, so you could simply plug the output from your VHS player into the input on the DVD recorder. This is actually documented in the manual for the DVD recorder I have. No PC required. Once copied you can eliminate the old machine.

Whatabout copy protected VHS tapes? Does the hardware mentioned be able to bypass the copyright protection which is on most of the big studio VHS production?
