I just found out that a friend of mine who is 23 years old got himself a vasectomy when he was 18. has anyone else heard of people doing this? he did it because he knew he would never want kids, and when in a relationship if the two get tested condoms aren't necessary, but this seems a bit extreme to me.

I had mine done when I was 32. And I had to wait 6 months before the appt. But I had already fathered 2 kids.

I don't think they'd do it at 18 unless there was good reason to, or the doctor didn't care. It's about $7500 to reverse, none of which is covered by ohip.

Not a good idea. There is no way that someone who is 18 or even 25 can be in a position to say that they are not going to want children. It doesn't take a great deal of effort to carry a condom and use it, especially if you are trying to be safe, so save yourself the pain now and the money later and wait until you are in a better position to make that decission.

I am surprised that your friend found a doctor that was willing to perform the vasectomy when your friend was 18

I think your friend may regret that decision somewhere down the road. Not a smart move IMO.

I wonder if he's telling you the whole story? Any possibility of some kind of family genetic problem he doesn't want to talk about?

Otherwise, I'm amazed he got a doctor to do this.
