Anyone still using Usenet?
I did to get nice pictures when it was free but the net wasn't fast enough for me back then. I gave it up and now I am thinking of going back into it, but it seems to be paid now.

IF you are using could you please provide some pointers, software, service and groups?

Thanks.

Used newsgroups 15-20 years ago when they were free also mainly for music. They were great and fast. Got all the music I ever wanted wanted. My ISP allowed 5 or 10 gigs, I forget which, downloaded per month for free, which was plenty. Had that setup for a couple years until they quit giving it away for free. Then you had to get a paid subscription. By then had all I wanted so passed on the paid subscription. Believe Usenet is still around but all is by paid subscription now.

I never got into it. And was too young or not even around at the time it was used. But you can probably find some info on reddit. Most are private groups, but I think torrent sites are more popular. Feel free to share. Or if you want a invite to a private tracker I can share one. DM me!

Okay then I guess I will let go of that event or experience and pass time with torrents.
Thanks.

Are torrent sites still popular? Used Pirate Bay which is still up and Demonoid which is down, in the past with good results. Haven't bothered with torrent sites lately which you had to be careful using since they are in the 'gray area' legally and you can get bogus files at times.

Newsgroups OTOH are fully legal since you have a paid subscription. Never had any problems using newsgroups. All files downloaded fast, were good and not bogus.

If you distribute copyright files on newsgroups, regardless if they are subscription or not it is still illegal.

It's a question of what files you are seeking.

Torrents are still a very popular method of file sharing. Public trackers like the pirate bay have copyright trolls that record the IP of those seeders. However, with a private/invite only tracker this is less probable.

That's how I found Terb.

Mainly music and newly released albums. Back in the day got a few brand new albums before they were even released for sale. Would listen to a few radio stations talk about some album about to go on sale in a month or two but they were already reviewing and playing tracks off that upcoming album. This was a clue that album was already on the web. Went on newsgroups and bingo, it was there, so downloaded and got it.

Never bothered with movies. Did all that back in the VCR era and wasn't about to repeat, since imo not really found many movies worth getting.

Never bothered with porn either. With everything free now with porn, why even bother.

I think it started with Yahoo groups late 1998 or 2000 which I was there but I think it was in Usernet - > Yahoo groups -> Terb.com -> terb.cc

I think there may have been a BBS up, then he switched to Yahoo groups. :cautious:

Nobody remember alt.sex.stories.text.repository as usenet before it morphed to the web site ASSTR.org? Lots of hours spent reading there before it started getting taken over by spammers

I use it for text-only (not binary) discussion. I use eternal-september.org as a free provider and slrn as my newsreader. I don't go on very often, but when I do, it's good stuff.

What's this about 5G airports and flights to Cuba? I'm a little behind on his stuff. Don't ask the right search questions...

Yes and before terb that was terb. Lots of reviews from the 90s there.

Was wondering what happened to news groups.
