In that he defected I am not understanding why the US Government and Media are making such a fuss about getting him back. It is clear that North Korea will want a lot to release him. Why not just leave him there and wish him luck?

Desertion can't be tolerated. Bad for morale. Considered atkin to Treason.

The U.S. has to get him back, just like that female basketball player, or there will be accusations of discrimination.

Sure, except discrimination is OK if it's the right sort. He should be a ghey, or a transgenda, piss off a Uganda Pasta, then the US will bust a nut to get him back, maybe give 50 ICBMs to Best Korea, anything.

I am sure the US will make some efforts, but there have been other defectors and they stayed for ages or forever and did pretty well.

This guy though, I'd bet the US and NK would almost be willing to go to war to see who gets stuck with him [not literally, hyperbole] . Couldn't get guaranteed promotions, drunk early in the morning, getting in fights because a local wouldn't share a drink, multiple times getting in trouble. More trouble than he is worth.
If he would stay in NK, if he doesn't straighten himself up, he will probably get executed for saying or doing the wrong thing.
