Hey everyone!

I'm heading off on vacation in a few weeks, and I need to buy a lot of US dollars. My friend told me that it's really high right now, and that I should wait a week or two. Does any money expert here know if I should follow my friend's advice or just buy it today?

Any expert who can predict exchange rate fluctuations over a few weeks would be
too busy spending away loads of cash like water to answer your question. My
non-expert advice for you is that life is short just go enjoy your trip without
worrying about the current disparity between the USD and the loonie.

I agree. Unless you are planning to convert a really large amount, the difference is likely not going to make much of a difference. Say, for example, you are planning to exchange C$10,000 (I chose that number on the basis that you want to avoid reporting headaches for higher amounts) and the exchange moves by $0.02. That would only be $200.

By the way, if you have a friend who is looking to exchange from USD to Canadian Dollars, it would be convenient to just exchange with that friend -- as opposed to exchanging at an institution like the bank, which charges for the exchange.

Use an ATM machine in usa (fees are much lower) to avoid those big exchange fees in canada. However try not to use the ATM machine much. MAke large withdrawals, yet be careful.

Ember, I get asked this everyday.
Unless you are planning on exchanging over $10K USD for you trip any 1-2 cent fluctuation from now until the end of February is not going to do a lot of damage to your bottom line.

The US economy isn't going to steam roll the Canadian economy in the next few months so... CDN and USD will be close to parity for a couple of months.

it really doesnt matter, the most ull save in 2 weeks is maybe 2 cents for every dollar so is saving 1- 2% really worth it ? at the same time the us dollar could rise abit more from current levels.

Don't know how it is today but in the past I always got better rates at Canadian banks and ATMs.
Banks in the US always had ridiculously high fees when exchanging currency.
Then the casinos came along that gave the best rates of all for hobby purposes....:eyebrows:

Agree with that as that will be the trend over the foreseeable future, however not in a straight line. There will be ups and downs but trying to catch the peaks and valleys is a useless exercise within the OP's time frame. As others have said, the amount is so minimal that the cost difference is nothing to worry about.

btw, there is a place, name escapes me at the moment, where you can buy US dollars at a cheaper exchange rates than banks. If the name comes to me, I will post.

Take a wild guess about how much we're bringing ;)
