Going to the states and am thinking, just thinking, about getting an iPad while there...US Cdn. $ is looking good and they are, I believe cheaper there.
So please...apple fans...help me. Is there anything I should know about buying the device in the US? Will it work seamlessly crossing the border? Is downloading tied up by the canadian telcos...do I have to get some sort of data package?
E-books and papers is what I am interested in...I see Kindle in the US have a lot more titles and better prices than what is available for wifi download in Canada. An extension of the two tier book pricing! Has anyone got a Kindle, again, do the Rogers of the world screw you up from downloading books on one in Canada that you can get easily in the states?

You shouldn't have any issues with using in CAN a US bought iPad. It's not tied to carrier like an iPhone so no string attached. It connects to internet via a wifi connection. As for titles simply specify in the browser that you want to access the US site and problem solved (same as Amazon). The warranty should not be an issue but just to be sure call an Apple store in US and ask.

Bought 3 iPads the first weekend (I believe first week April) they were available in Buffalo - pre-ordered them in January. In May my nephew dropped one of them and dark lines ran across the screen. When the iPad frenzy died in Canada in June, my nephew went to the Apple store at Square One. No questions asked, they gave him a brand new iPad. The did not even ask for the receipt. Long Live Apple!

I didn't think there was a significant price difference between MSRP in Canada and the US. I'm not totally sure but the 3G versions of the iPad may be locked.

You believe they're cheaper, but not by much. The base model in the U.S. is only $50 cheaper, so not worth the drive.

Appreciate the input one and all. So if I understand the comments correctly...price not that much different, they are unlocked, if I register with Amazon for e-books in the states...will be able to access those rather than the more restricted Canadian lists, it should work ok with any wifi connection here...and the warranty will be covered by the apple store.
I also just discovered that there is a Kindle App for the iPad, iPhone....so it will give me access to the broader library. Cool.
Thanks all..

All true, don't know if/how the ABC and Netflix apps work in Canada but they are worth downloading depending on the availability.

The Netflix app works great for the Canadian Netflix users. Getting a US based Netflix account here is a bit tricky. The Canadian iTunes may even have a region specific version of the Netflix app as well. You might need a US iTunes account, and a CC with a US billing address. Or, maybe a jail broken iPad.

The Canadian Netflix just doesn't have the selection the US version does. I don't think the Canadian iTunes has the apps for the american channels(CRTC). There is a CityTV app for the iPad but the annoying thing about it is that the video does not go full screen.

U do need a American iTunes account for the American apps and vice versa for the Canadian store and apps. As far as warranty goes apple care is world wide.

makes sense...this is how they would control the "Canadian" approved content...like copyright/access to books etc. I believe there is an amazon iPad app that one can get but I bet it would again be filtered for those books available to Canadians vs US users!
In a book store the other day the average price difference between US price and Canadian price $4! even though the $ is about par...what a rip off. Why the hell do put up with this made in Canada policy from books to communications to the auto industry!!!!
