Aloha Snackbar !! Good job.

The US has killed 48 al-Shabab fighters in 4 air strikes in Somalia this year

The U.S. killed 12 al-Shabab terrorist fighters with an airstrike in Somalia at the request of the country's government, the U.S. announced Sunday.

U.S. forces carried out the strike on Friday, hitting a remote location west of Hobyo, Somalia, U.S. Africa Command said. It was the fourth U.S. strike against al-Shabab this year, and brought the total death toll for the terror group to 48.

"At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia and in support of Somali National Army engagements against al-Shabab, U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense strike Feb 10, 2023," AFRICOM wrote in a statement.

"Somalia remains central to stability and security in all of East Africa. U.S. Africa Command's forces train, advise, and assist partner forces to help give them the tools they need to defeat al-Shabab, the largest and most deadly al-Qaeda network in the world," the statement continued. The U.S. added that an initial assessment indicated that no civilians were killed in the strike.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's regime receives both humanitarian and military support from the U.S. for his ongoing campaign for economic reform, social and political reconciliation, and religious tolerance, AFRICOM wrote.

"U.S. Africa Command provides support to the Somali government to address terrorist threats, but we are only part of the U.S. efforts there," AFRICOM chief Gen. Michael Langley said in a statement.

"Our Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development colleagues have programs that help build resilience through education and training; develop agricultural diversity; improve markets and trade; and strengthen democracy and good governance," he added.

I still fail to see how assassinating people makes the world safer.
"The U.S. killed 12 al-Shabab terrorist fighters with an airstrike in Somalia at the request of the country's government, the U.S. announced Sunday."

The country asked and the US obliged. If they are terrorists killing innocent people I have no issue wiping them out albeit I do not know much about what is going on in Somalia and who is who so I will rely on US intelligence.

How trustworthy do you think the Somali government is in general?

I don't know so I must rely on US intelligence who decided to send in the fighter jets to take out what they believe are terrorists based on the Somalian government's request.

Sort of like Afghanistan?
Just doesn't seem to do anything but enrage the locals and make them more angry at westerners.
If your goal is to spread more democracy then doing so with fighter jets just seems counterproductive.

I dunno, I'm a firm believer that a dead terrorist is a good terrorist. I don't have any sympathy for folks killing innocent people. I don't care where the terrorist is from, the color of their skin or their gender, if they kill innocent people they deserve to be taken out in style.

I'm a firm believer in rule of law instead of assassination.
The term 'terrorist' just seems to be used as an excuse to avoid the application of law.
Back to Afghanistan, how many times did the US send missiles on wedding parties and families that to Afghani's would qualify as 'terrorism'?
There just has to be a better way.

There does.
But airstrikes are never completely going away.

It is good how much Biden has reduced them from what we can tell, since for a while there they were a constant staple of US policy.
