Heard a puzzle but not the answer.

Sailboat travels around the world at the equator.

Which part of the boat travels the most?

It seems to me the bow and stern have travelled equal distance however that the problem is posed leads me to believe I am incorrect.

Anyone know the answer?

The top of the mast, since it is the highest point on the sailboat. The key is to picture it traveling around the equator. Imagine if the mast was a million miles high, and the sailboat was going around the equator, with the mast covering a much greater distance.

The tippitytop part.

Gotta stop my linear thinking.

Thought the equator had something to do with it.

That would also be true in absolute terms since the circumference of the earth is greatest at the equator so therefore by some minuscule (nanometre/nanometer) distance the center of an aircraft 100 meters/feet wide which flew exactly on the equator around the world would travel farther than the tips of the wings. However, I'm not going to loose sleep over it.

here is a thought.

What would happen then, if the aircraft kept circiling the earth non stop.
Would the stress on the wings, having travelled less distance , eventually tear the craft apart?

no the '' crash '' would when it ran out of fuel...;)

what about the far end of the boom? i'm guessing that there is a hell of a lot of tacking on a round the world sail trip.:D

Not to be considered as this is a theoretical question although I assume you knew that.

Now that I think of it, I have posed a good question.

Assuming that the path is circular and if the tippitytop part is 10m high (for example), then it will travel 10m x Pi longer than the boat. Elementary stuff. (Pi = 3.14...)

10m would be the delta r, thus delta d==20, circum= pi * delta D

No one says it sails around the equator. It travels. Meaning that when it hits land, it is pulled by a truck on land, etc...

Practical thinking suggests that the numb nuts answer is correct.

Theoretically if the sail boat travels continuously around the equator than the top of the mast; but if the sail boat makes one revolution around the equator from a stop/start position then the anchor travels furthest.

Fucked if I know.:D

I do not agree. If the wings bent to fit the curvature of the earth, then your statement would be true. But assuming that the wings stayed rigid, they would travel the same distance, the circles travelled by the wingtips and the centre point at the height of the wings would have the same diameter.
