Report: Unprecedented Number Of Death Threats Against Obama -- And Secret Service Overwhelmed
Jillian Rayfield | October 19, 2009, 6:00PM

The Boston Globe reports that a new internal Congressional Research Service report and government sources say there are an unprecedented number of death threats against President Obama -- and that the Secret Service is insufficiently funded and staffed to deal with them.

According to The Globe, a report issued by the Congressional Research Service shows that the Secret Service is investigating more threats against government officials than ever before, and questions whether the 144-year old agency should continue probing financial crimes, as was its original mandate.

In total, the Secret Service regularly protects 32 people and arranges security for high-profile events. But the election of Barack Obama has increased threats against the president's life by 400 percent from his predecessor, according to "In the President's Secret Service," Ronald Kessler's account of presidential security. The Secret Service has looked into a number of race-based threats since Obama took office, and a Facebook poll that asked "Should Obama be killed?" President Obama also had a Secret Service detail 18 months before the election, the earliest of any Presidential candidate.

As Bryan Bender at The Boston Globe reports, some government officials are calling for a review of the way the agency is run, and suggesting that some of its financial investigations be transferred to the Treasury Department so the Secret Service can focus on terrorist and assassination threats.

The Southern Poverty Law Center issued a report back in August that found that the number of white supremacist militia groups has spiked by 35% since 2000. The Secret Service has, in turn, increased its employees from 6,700 two years ago to a projected 7,055 in the coming fiscal year, almost entirely devoted to protecting national leaders. But that's a staff increase of just 5.3 percent -- nowhere near the 400 percent increase in threats to the president's life.

I think many Americans are irate at the bailouts and the massive bonuses being given out, meanwhile many Americans are losing everything, this has been a wall street recovery.

Then again this comes from the back to the surface for the second time and frantically splashing Boston Globe which is owned by The New York Times.

Therefore the truth is probably that although threats may be up, serious threats are only marginally up.

I'd also wonder what "Government Official" made the inane statement - the protection division of the U.S. Secret Service is the tail on the dog compared with its primary missions of investigating counterfeiting, and other financial crimes.

between the economic stoppage the bailout money going into bonuses and the small fact that his skin tone is a little darker than the american public is used to I am surprised there arn't more. That is in spite of woodies predelection for blaming eveerything on the right

Some people really don't like black people.......and one of them is the president. The Secret service can handle terrorists..it's the angry ignorance that I worry a bit about.

The bail outs and bonuses have very little to do with it as they started day one. Wackos were plotting actions even before he won the election.

They now have to make one of these arrests very public and show people what will happen if you threatened the leader of your country with a very public court case. You'll never stop the nutters, but it may sway the fence sitters with the 'they really are watching us' going through their minds.

I don't care how upset you are with your leaders, in most of the free world, you don't threaten to kill them and expect people to shrug it off.

It is important to note (and I have seen nothing from the horse’s mouth that indicates it is any different than it has been for years), that the number of serious potential assassins is fortunately extremely small, and the number of little action big talkers very much larger by many multiples.

This is not to disagree with what Blackrock is saying, but I do believe that there is a certain amount of "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" to such news reports

And the GREAT majority of that is found in the right!....
Sorry Woodie, your fixation on the right is wrong here. There are nut cases all over the spectrum. It's not a right/left/centre thing.

It shouldn't matter which way they lean, but that they're there at all.

Hardly surprising considering the vitriol being spewed daily by the likes of Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh and O'Reilly. Whatever you may say about the left leaning or liberal commentators they do not foment hatred in the same way. Just look at the coverage of the "birthers", "teabaggers" etc. These characters thrive on creating division and the more mean spirited and inflammatory their rhetoric the higher their ratings. It is truly appalling and somewhat shocking.

Whatever the ratio is between serious and less serious threats, an increase of 400%
has to be alarming, and your "the sky is [not] falling" response is less than comforting.

You know as well as I do, how many people in the US of A despise a black president.

(even if he is not that black)

Would you be surprised if I told you there are approximately 30 threats a day made against the POTUS. This is the count of the credable threats not just the 'bigmouth in a bar' type.

There has been an increase since the year 2000 of domestic hate group from over 600 to 900+.

This doesn't sound like the 'sky is falling' to me. Remember the Kennedy brothers. The US has it's share of nutbars. Too many? Who knows.

Yes I would be quite surprised if all 30 were considered serious enough (skills, opportunity etc. . .) to end up on the stop and detain list.

Perhaps I’m just not exposed to those kinds of nuts. Even if you hate the President, why on earth would you want to assinate him when you would then get Vice-President Biden or Speaker Pelosi? Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire!

Yes you can believe it. Just a little light reading if you have the time. Just for starters;
