Okay for all the pervos clicking on this post hoping to hear about some babysitter action. You're out of luck.

This is a comment I notice a lot of fathers make.

"Sorry I can't I'm babysitting tonight, my SO is out tonight."

With all due respect you're not babysitting you are parenting.

Maybe it's semantics but I think it's something to think about.

I mean mothers don't say they are babysitting when talking about their own child.

...we don't use the "babysitting" word in our house, and correct others when they use it in reference to us.

I will joke about being on "daddy duty" or "playing 'Mr. Mom' depending on who I am talking to. But you are toatally right - I never consider time with my kid a burden.

I don't see the term "babysitting" as negative, it's just a word for looking after children. Perhaps if they are over 3 it sounds out of place.
"Parenting" or other nouns turned into verbs still sounds odd to me.

I am sure those others appreciate being " corrected " I wouldn't make such a big thing about it.

I agree, and also I've never heard a mother say, "Sorry I can't make it, I'm parenting the kids tonight". Though "Parenting" sounds more responsible, to me it is not a verb.

Okay how about "Can't I'm staying in with the kids." Babysititng to me implies it's done by someone other than the parents as a job.

Maybe I'm not conveying the idea properly but all I'm saying is I've never heard a mother say that about her kids but I hear men say it.

Oh and WWW..... sorry about the misleading title. :D

who cares how you call it. It sounds a bit anal to get upset about it. The main thing is when you do babysit or parent or look after the kids that you don't plunk them in front of the tele so you can sneak off and look at gay porn.

You guys are focusing only on the misuse of the words but I'm suggesting that there are certain attitudes that underlie it. I'm suggesting that some dad's sometimes look at their responsibilities differently.

When I said same thing to friends a while back, they gave me a look as if I was from out of space. As if men don't look after kids. After they got past the 'since when do you have kids?'...they remain shock a guy would volunteer to do the Uncle Buck thing with nephews & nieces. Parenting is not easy & everyone can use a break. The bonus, their kids don't mind old Uncle Buck.

I've the world of respect for parents committed to their kids. But I don't understand parents that leave parenting to others. Men seem to be the usual guilty party.

I agree with this also but the term I've always heard is "Sorry Can't do anything tonight im 'LOOKING AFTER' the kids/kid.
