I think college/university students are much more serious about their studies now than when I was in university. The competition for marks and later for jobs is intense. Plus competition from foreign students as well. I heard McGill's policy now is 25% foreign, it was 15% when I was there.

I was talking to the mother of a daughter who is in her final year of high school. Her grade average is 95% and she is still worried she may not be accepted to a university of her choice. Of course, I also heard that grades now are inflated compared to the past.
